If you have a cat (or know someone who does), petfinder.com proclaims August 22 to 28 Take Your Cat to the Vet Week!? And I VERY much endorse the idea. Elevating the status of cats, that's why we began the CATalyst Council. Sadly, their status does require a jolt.
Here are some facts: Cats are America's number one companion.? According to the American Veterinary Medical Association U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook ? a survey of pet owners - there are now 81.7 million pet cats? and 72.1 million dogs. Yet your average cat sees the veterinarian less than half as often as the average dog!
I argue cats are loved by their people as much as dogs are - so why aren't cat's seeing the veterinarian?
- People think indoor cats don't get sick and/or understand cats require preventive care (no matter if they live indoors only or not).
- Cats are typically subtle about showing illness; people truly don't know when their cats are not feeling well.
- Most of all, it's about transport. Take the carrier out - and the cat high-tails it to another room, another county.
I will address all these topics in further detail over the course of the next few days. The sad bottom line is that veterinary visits on the decline for dogs and especially for cats. This is tragic. Our pets are paying a price with preventable illness on the rise as a result. The American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association and others have responded by creating Pet Partnership for Preventive Healthcare.?
