Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded

Just when you thought it safe to declare polyester dead, Larry Laffer has slunk back onto the scene. The title character of the Leisure Suit Larry games, which popped into the public consciousness in 1987 and pulled out of it again after a couple of sloppy engagements during the last decade, isn't so much trying to score a new success as he is reestablish his old bona fides. Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded, in fact, is almost a scene-by-scene remake of the 1991 VGA remake of the series' inaugural chapter. This new version is the product of a successful Kickstarter project shepherded by Larry's creator, Al Lowe, now ensconced at Replay Games The final product, though polished for what it is, isn't an easy sell; you may never forget your first time, but this game won't give you anything new to remember.

Larry, Past and Present
What distinguished the original (which was conceived as a graphical update to 1981's all-text Softporn Adventure) and its two immediate sequels were that they were more than simple-minded sex romps. Sure, Larry started as a 40-year-old virgin in 1970s clothing who vowed to become a man during one night in the gambling capital of Lost Wages. But they were really genre comedies in which sex just happened to feature prominently.

The first (the "losing it" flick), the second, 1988's Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (in Several Wrong Places), a twisted spy thriller; and the third, subtitled Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals, which fused a midlife crisis tale with the novelty of switching player control to Larry's latest love interest about two-thirds of the way through, shared a stiff undercurrent of realism that anchored their absurd plots. Larry was more palatable as an impossibly pathetic loser if everyone around him was rigidly committed to factual existence (or at least a close approximation of one). The worlds might have been wacky, but they made sense on their own terms?and thus Larry could be believably at odds with it all.

Unfortunately, with Reloaded, Lowe has latched onto the look and feel of the much less satisfying entries that followed, which featured trailblazing video and sound, clunky no-typing interfaces, and a dedication to caricature in design and story that capture none of the originals' virulent charm. The result is something more rickety than raunchy.

Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded : Inside Lefty

Enter, Stage Lefty
You begin, as you always have, outside Lefty's Bar, and proceed on your quest through the dingy city streets and questionable night spots in search of the women who can give you what you want. Locales are well chosen, but limited: there's a convenience store (with the expected Indian cashier), a nightclub, an all-night wedding chapel, and a glitzy hotel-casino, all of which will naturally become important at some point. You can (and, in fact, must) gamble at certain points, fraternize with various females with whom you can occupy a bed (and perhaps a?gasp?long-term relationship), and explore a bit to sample all of the lubricated grit this desert oasis of sin has to offer.

All this still works on the most basic levels, but things are a bit wartier on this go-round. Lost Wages looks self-consciously skeevy in its incarnation here, as though it's trying too hard to be gritty and run-down, and the effect is neither evocative nor amusing. The visuals are fine for what they are, though the people and animals who resemble paper cutouts fail to mesh stylistically with their surroundings, making the playing experience even more distancing.

Hand, Tongue, Zipper
The interface, from which you select pictures representing the actions you want to perform (walking legs, a hand, your inventory, a tongue, and a zipper?the last two getting far less use than you may expect), remains a depressing simplification that inhibits exploration and creativity, and shepherds you more into a linear puzzle narrative than it does richer puzzle solving. It also sets up its share of ridiculous scenarios, such as when you discover a password you need to use later: Because you only interact with objects, you have to cut your body, write the password in blood on a piece of paper, and then show it to the person who needs to see it. In 1987 you just typed it in.

The Real Bradley Manning Problem

Now that a military judge has acquitted Pfc. Bradley Manning of aiding the enemy and convicted him of violating the Espionage Act, civil libertarians are breathing a small sigh of relief. But the Obama administration still has a big problem: how to control the flow of information between government agencies so you don't have a system that allows a private stationed in Iraq--or a contractor dating an acrobat in Hawaii--from downloading and distributing secret documents.

Top officials know they've got a problem. Earlier this month, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter addressed the information-sharing problem at the Aspen Security Forum. "There was an enormous amount of information concentrated in one place," Carter said. "It creates too much information in one place. You had an individual who was given very substantial authority to access that information and move that information. That ought not to be the case, either."

How did we get in this mess? Before the 9/11 attacks, government policies were the worst of both worlds: On one hand, you had a vast overclassification of documents shielding many secrets from government accountability. (See the 1997 panel led by the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan.) And, of course, you had too little sharing between government agencies, which could possibly have prevented 9/11. When it came to the hijackers, we now sadly know the FBI didn't know what the CIA was doing--and vice versa. Even within the FBI, there wasn't enough information sharing.

A number of changes were made after that, thanks to the 9/11 report. There were things like the National Counter Terrorism Center, the Patriot Act's breaking down of walls between agencies, and a vast expansion of computer sharing. As the national security state swelled, there was an explosion in classification, but at least the upside was an ability for agencies to cooperate more easily, and this led to the bin Laden raid and the capture of the Times Square bomber. The vast archives of sensitive information grew, and so did those who had access to them, including Manning, who inserted blank CDs marked "Lady Gaga," slipped them into a drive in Baghdad, donned headphones like he was rocking out, and downloaded some 700,000 documents, shipping them off to WikiLeaks.

As a low-level military intelligence officer, Manning not surprisingly had access to Pentagon secrets. But one of the most perplexing things about the case was his access to State Department cables. When Manning's leak was first uncovered, then-Rep. Pete Hoekstra asked what everyone was wondering. "Why would a private first class, sitting in Baghdad, have access to data far beyond his area of responsibility?" Hoekstra asked. "How can it be that between 500,000 and potentially over a million government employees have access to a database of sensitive State Department cables?"

In the following months, we learned a lot more about the wide availability of State Department cables. "Thee idea was that there was a wealth of information that needed to be available on the ground, to the war-fighters," testified Charlie Wisecarver, the former deputy chief technology officer at State during the Manning trial who outlined the Horizontal Fusion program. Collecting the cables was a high priority at State,?which even asked department enlisted Foreign Service officers' spouses to scan in older cables. Cables were uploaded to the Defense Department's Secret Internet Protocol Router Network. The State Department didn't put much in the way of restrictions on their use by the military, although at Foggy Bottom there were more protocols. The consequence is, Manning's documents rocked the world, perhaps even helping to ignite the Arab Spring when it was revealed how corrupt U.S. officials considered the Tunisian regime.

Steps have been taken to come up with a more sensible information flow. State is scrubbing cables more carefully before sending them to the Pentagon, and the Pentagon is tightening access. As part of a discussion of the Snowden case at the Aspen Security Forum in July, National Security Agency Director General Keith Alexander said, "You limit the numbers of people who can write to removable media. Instead of allowing all systems administrators [to do it], you drop it down to a few and use a two-person rule.... We'll close and lock server rooms, so that it takes two people to get in there."

But Washington is still worried. In a recent interview with National Journal, Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, a former officer in the Navy Intelligence Reserve, said, "We have a classified Internet on the backside of the intelligence community, and if you're on that system, then a Bradley Manning can download the presidential book of secrets like in the movie [National Treasure]." He noted that he didn't have nearly the kind of access to government-wide data when he was in the Balkans and Afghanistan as part of the reserves.

The trouble for Obama and his successors is that there's no easy way to fix the problem. Yes, you can make it harder to download data or have more alerts when someone does. It's pretty clear that no system is safe, and as long as the government has lots of people with lots of access to goldmines of classified data this won't be the last Bradley Manning.

Traffic Accidents Decrease in First Half of Ramadan | Jordan ...

pic12513ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates ? Tuesday, July 30th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

According to statistics issued by the Traffic Coordination Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior, the number of traffic accidents of different types across the country dropped by 28 accidents in the first half of the Holy Month of Ramadan this year, compared to the same period in 2012. A total of 119 accidents were reported in the first half of Ramadan this year, compared to the 147 accidents in the same period last year.

Statistics also showed that crash accidents dropped by 11 accidents, whereas 73 accidents were reported in the first half of Ramadan compared to 84 last year. Turnover accidents witnessed a slight increase of 5 accidents, rising from 19 accidents in the first half of Ramadan 2012 to 24 accidents this year.? Run-over accidents however, witnessed a noticeable decrease by 21 accidents, dropping to 20 from 41 last year.

Moreover, statistics provided a comprehensive classification of traffic accidents, whereas all accidents other than crash, turnover and run-over accidents, were placed under the category Other Accidents. These other accidents represent a small percentage of the total number of traffic accidents, and amounted to 2 accidents during the first half of Ramadan? in 2012 and 2013.

Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director General of the Traffic Coordination Directorate at the Ministry of Interior, said: ?Despite the decrease in the number of traffic accidents across the country, the number of deaths increased by 7 cases; a total of 28 deaths were reported during the first half of Ramadan this year, compared to 21 last year. However, injuries of all kinds dropped by 47 this year, and amounted to 174 simple, moderate and severe injuries compared to 221 during the same period in 2012.

According to Brigadier Al Zaabi: ?The increase in the number of deaths? during the first half of Ramadan this year, compared to the same period last year, is due to the severity of the accidents, which occur due? to over speeding, and failure to observe traffic laws and regulations, such as crossing red lights and lack of concentration while driving.?

He added: ?Traffic accidents of all kinds, and their resulting deaths and injuries, as well as traffic violations, are the natural results of the increasing movement of vehicles on the country?s roads. The Traffic and Patrols Departments in the country are diligently endeavoring to train and qualify thousands of people wishing to obtain driving licenses, as one of the most important requirement for economical and social development across the country.?

Brigadier Al Zaabi called upon motorists to observe traffic laws and regulation and legal speed limits, in order to avoid the risks of traffic accidents, and their repercussions.

He stressed the importance of complying with traffic laws and regulations, driving carefully, keeping a safe? distance between vehicles, avoiding traffic disruption due to random parking at public parking spaces. He warned them against parking in spaces dedicated to people with special needs, civil defense or ambulance and rescue teams, to avoid hampering their work in emergency cases. He urged motorists to avoid using their mobile phones while driving, whether to talk, SMS or chat.

Brigadier Al Zaabi explained: ?Using hand-held mobile phones while driving is a violation to the law, due to its great danger to the life of motorists and road users alike. Using hand-held mobile phones to talk, text or chat may distract drivers and reduce their concentration and reactions, thus leading to traffic accidents.?

Medical noncompliance -- or failure to follow the doctor's orders -- is estimated to increase healthcare costs in the US by $100 billion per year. Patients sometimes opt not to take medicines, for instance, because the side effects are unbearable or the dosing regimens are too complicated. But medical noncompliance may also stem from sheer inertia -- the tendency to stay in the current state, even when that state is undesirable.

In a series of studies, Gaurav Suri and colleagues from Stanford and Tel Aviv Universities tested whether this status-quo bias could result in behavior that is detrimental, and whether such a bias could be lessened with minimal interventions.

Their results are published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

In the first study, participants were told that the research would involve receiving electric shocks. One group was told that they were required to choose one of two options: They could press a button to stop the shock 10 seconds earlier, or press another button to keep the waiting time the same. As the researchers expected, most people opted to get the shock over with early.

In contrast, those participants who were told that they could press a time-decrease button if they wanted to were more likely to stick with the status quo: Only about 40% chose to push the button in order to shorten the trial.

The researchers saw similar results when they told participants that pressing a button would reduce the chance of shock by as much as 90%. Those participants who had to make a proactive choice to press the button opted to leave it untouched about half the time, even though it meant they had to withstand shocks they themselves rated as highly undesirable.

These studies clearly demonstrate that, when faced with a choice that requires them to make a proactive decision, people often opt do nothing, even when actions that are easy to perform could noticeably improve their current state.

Interestingly, the researchers found that simply requiring participants to press the button on an early trial made them more likely to hit the button on later trials. Thus, while medical noncompliance may sometimes result from patient inaction, the researchers conclude that people may be capable of making productive choices about their health if given a nudge in the right direction.

Moto X: Can Google deliver the Android-supercharger it promised - and does it need to?

Back in August 2011 when Google first revealed its plan to buy Motorola Mobility, it promised the acquisition would "supercharge the entire Android ecosystem". And close to two years later, Motorola is on the brink of unveiling its new flagship smartphone, the Moto X: is it a concrete attempt to deliver on that promise, or something else entirely?

The company has touted the Moto X as the first smartphone "designed, engineered and assembled" in the US (although this doesn't mention where the components are being made). Motorola argues that this can give it an advantage over its rivals by bringing engineers and designers together to innovate faster (Apple's iPhone is, of course, "Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China", as the back of every device tells you).

Motorola also claims the Moto X will be the "first smartphone that you can design yourself" although this is thought to mean that buyers can choose colours and engravings rather than have any say over the internals. Motorola said by the end of the summer it expects to have more than 2000 new employees in Fort Worth, Texas working on its new hero device.

The Moto X will be formally unveiled at an event in New York later this week, but already Google has been trying to build momentum by drip feeding out some details ? and Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt using the phone at an event.

At the D11 conference in May, Motorola chief executive Dennis Woodside also gave an overview of some the features of the new device.

"Motorola has always been really good at managing the power on the device. Motorola's also been really good at managing ultra low-power sensors, the gyroscope and the accelerometer and keeping those on all the time so that the device knows different use states: it knows that it's in my pocket right now, it knows when I take it out of my pocket that I might want to do something ? I might want to take a picture. It anticipates my needs," he said.

"Imagine you are in the car the device will know whether its on or off that it's travelling at 60 miles an hour and it's going to act differently so you can interact with it safely."

Google's Motorola history

Google announced its plan to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn back in August 2011 (the deal closed in May 2012), with the search giant's CEO, Larry Page, claiming that the acquisition would "supercharge the Android ecosystem" and enhance competition in mobile computing.

motorola-large
"This guy is building exactly what you think he is. Designed by you. Assembled in the USA," says Motorola in a tweet promoting the Moto X.

At the time, Google was keen to reassure other handset makers that the Google-created Android operating system would remain open. Andy Rubin, senior vice president of mobile at Google, said: "Our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices."

But, for all the executive emphasis on the handset business, most industry watchers saw the deal being mostly about getting hold of Motorola's mobile technology patent portfolio (including 17,000 patents and 7,500 patent applications) to help Google secure Android against a number of legal spats, with the mobile handset business essentially just a bonus.

Since the acquisition Google has sold off Motorola's set-top box unit and manufacturing facilities, and has seemed underwhelmed by the hardware roadmap it had bought?? any fear of upsetting other Android licencees appears to have been overstated, thanks to Motorola's lack of headline- or sales-generating devices.

In March, Google chief financial officer Patrick Pichette said Google had inherited an 18-month legacy product pipeline which it had to "drain" before it can launch anything "wow" or up to the standard expected for Google products.

And it looks like Motorola is in need of wow: according to figures from ComScore, in May this year Motorola was the brand of choice for just 7.8 percent of US smartphone subscribers, down from 8.4 percent in February, and down from 12 percent back in May 2012 when the Google acquisition closed. In contrast, Apple has 39.2 percent of the market, and Samsung 23 percent ? market share made up mostly of Android devices.

In light of that, it's hard to see why Google would want (via Motorola) to build its own mobile hardware. While Microsoft was forced to step in and build its own hardware in the shape of the Surface tablet because it was frustrated by the lack of innovation from its partners, the Android ecosystem is vibrant and Samsung (in particular) is delivering plenty of excitement with its Galaxy S4.

What next?

So why is Google putting effort into the Moto X when Android is doing quite nicely without it?

According to Tony Cripps, principal analyst for devices and platforms at researchers Ovum, while Android is the market leader at the moment, having Motorola on side gives Google a hedge against any of its other handset partners choosing another operating system.

"While Android remains a strategically important piece of the Google offering they will look to protect that as much as they can, and if driving that through their own inhouse hardware company is an option they will do it."

It may seem a distant threat given Samsung's success with Android devices, but who wants all their eggs in one basket? While Samsung, which accounts for almost half of all Android handsets sold, is doing very nicely from Google's operating system, it still makes sense to guard against a defection: the mobile industry has seen high-profile switches before, and Samsung has been flirting with rival OS Tizen. An Android rejection may not happen soon, but Google isn't about to let itself be taken by surprise.

Indeed, Google is well known for playing the long game when it comes to technology, which means the success or failure of one handset is less relevant ? as Larry Page said when the Motorola acquisition closed: "It's a well known fact that people tend to overestimate the impact technology will have in the short term, but underestimate its significance in the longer term. Many users coming online today may never use a desktop machine, and the impact of that transition will be profound."

Who'll be the next Federal Reserve chief? Janet Yellen gains support.

President Obama has hinted that he will not nominate Ben Bernanke to another term as chairman of the Federal Reserve. Janet Yellen appears to be the experts' front-runner.

Ben Bernanke hasn?t announced his own retirement, but the race to succeed him as Federal Reserve chairman has suddenly become very public ? complete with dueling opinion articles, White House leaks, and senators angling to say who they?d like in the job.

The latest straw in the wind: Economists in a new survey say they?d like to see the post filled by Janet Yellen, the woman who currently serves as Fed vice chair.

She?s viewed as having a similar policy stance to Mr. Bernanke, and perhaps even more willing to place a high priority on economic growth rather than worry about inflation.

The speculation comes after news reports that President Obama?s short list for nomination also features Larry Summers, a long-time economic official in the Democratic administrations of both Mr. Obama and Bill Clinton.

Obama has hinted strongly that he won?t be nominating Bernanke ? who will have served eight years guiding interest rates and monetary policy when his term expires early in 2014.

In an interview published over the weekend, Obama said he?s looking at "some extraordinary candidates" and will announce his pick "over the next several months."

Two new surveys of economists suggest considerable backing for Ms. Yellen.

A CNBC survey of a few dozen economists, investment traders, and market strategists showed both a preference for Yellen and an expectation that Obama will choose her.

In the July poll, 70 percent of respondents said they expect Obama to tap Yellen for the job, and 25 percent expect the nod to go to Mr. Summers. When asked who the president should nominate, views were even starker: 50 percent said Yellen and only 2.5 percent favored Summers.

Bernanke himself and conservative economist John Taylor of Stanford University outscored Summers in the survey.

Summers has a reputation as intellectually brilliant, but with an abrasive personality that may not be well suited to the consensus-building task of leading the Fed?s policy committee.

He has differentiated himself from Yellen and Bernanke, in recent comments, by raising questions about whether the Fed?s current ?quantitative easing? has been effective. (This ?QE? policy involves buying assets such as Treasury bonds in a bid to keep long-term interest rates low and rev up economic growth.)

Another new survey of economists, by USA Today, found 32 expecting Yellen to be Obama?s pick and four expecting Summers, who was Obama?s first-term economic-policy guru and President Clinton's Treasury secretary.

In a weekend interview in The New York Times, Obama said he wants a Fed leader who will work ?in service of the lives of ordinary Americans getting better," and not just focus on tame inflation and stable markets.

?Let's make sure that we're growing the economy,? Obama said.

Yellen and Summers aren?t the only ones around with credentials to be considered for the Fed post, but for now the debate is centering on them.

Whoever he picks, Obama must get his nominee through the Senate confirmation process.

Last week, some Democratic senators wrote a letter to Obama in praise of Yellen. By contrast, some Republicans could object to her as not concerned enough about the risk of inflation to the economy.

In an opinion piece published Monday in The Wall Street Journal, former Fed official Alan Blinder of Princeton University praised Yellen?s monetary touch. He said she helped engineer a ?perfect soft landing? for the economy in 1996 ? so that the Fed?s inflation-fighting boosts in interest rates didn?t go too far and cause a recession.

?If that sounds easy, it?s not,? Mr. Blinder said.

Microsoft's ad for the Lumia 1020 puts the camera first

AT&T has started its TV ad campaign for the Nokia Lumia 1020 with a commercial that shows how some people could be fooled into thinking shots made from its camera were taken closer than their actual distance from the subject. Today, Microsoft joins in the promotional campaign for the Lumia 1020 smartphone that also puts the focus on its 41 inch PureView camera.

The ad, which was uploaded to the Windows Phone YouTube channel, at first shows people in various locations using their hands to hold ... nothing. The shape of their hands makes it look like they are supposed to be holding a smartphone as they try to take images of the scenery.

It's only at the end where the Nokia Lumia 1020 actually appears magically in the empty hands of those people, with Microsoft proclaiming that this new device is the first smartphone that puts the camera first.

This is the most expensive Windows Phone 8 device that has been released, with AT&T selling the Lumia 1020 for $299.99 with a new two year contract,?so it will be interesting to see if the camera is enough to convince consumers to put down the cash.

Campaign manager quits but Anthony Weiner insists he won't leave race for NYC mayor

Mr Weiner confirmed that Mr Kedem has resigned but wouldn't say who is replacing him. "We have an amazing staff, but this isn't about the people working on the campaign. It's about the people we're campaigning for," he said after speaking at a Brooklyn church.

Meanwhile on Sunday, his rival for the Democratic nomination, Christine Quinn, speaker of the New York City Council, said Mr Weiner has shown "a pattern of reckless behavior, an inability to tell the truth and a real lack of maturity and responsibility."

"I don't think he should be mayor, and I think the voters, if he stays in the race, will make that clear," Ms Quinn said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Mr Weiner was forced to discuss his online behavior this past week after a gossip website printed excerpts of conversations Mr Weiner had with Indiana college student Sydney Leathers last summer.

With his wife, Huma Abedin, a former top aide to ex-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, alongside, Mr Weiner apologised and promised that the "behavior is behind me." He later admitted that he traded racy messages with at least three women since leaving office.

He vowed to stay in the race, saying he believed "people care more about their futures than my past with my wife and my embarrassing things."

Ms Quinn led the race before mr Weiner jumped in but slipped behind him in most polls over the past two months. But a one-day poll conducted after the latest revelations has her leading Mr Weiner in the race for the Democratic nomination. The mayoral primary is on September 10, and the general election is November 5.

Mr Kedem had managed the re-election of John DeStefano Jr. to a 10th term as mayor of New Haven in 2011 and worked on Hillary Clinton's failed 2008 presidential campaign.

Angelina Jolie is highest-paid Hollywood actress

Celebs

Her next role is that of an evil queen in "Maleficent," but sometimes being bad pays very well. Angelina Jolie is the highest-paid actress in Hollywood, according to a Forbes report on Monday. The magazine estimated her earnings at $33 million for the last year.

Jolie easily beat out Jennifer Lawrence, who came in second with $26 million in yearly earnings. But then again, Lawrence is just 22 to Jolie's 38.

Third on the list was another youngster, 23-year-old "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart, who topped last year's list with $34.5 million but made $22 million last year.

Jennifer Aniston came in fourth with $20 million, and Emma Stone, new to the list, is in the fifth-place spot with $16 million.

(AP) ? The U.S. on Sunday announced the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian talks following years of stalemate, after Israel's Cabinet agreed to release 104 Palestinian prisoners convicted of deadly attacks.

The return to direct contacts between the sides gave U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry his first concrete achievement after months of shuttle diplomacy.

The U.S. said preliminary talks would begin Monday, but it remains unclear whether they will lead to a formal resumption of peace talks that broke down in 2008.

Despite a return to the table, neither side appeared upbeat. Each has blamed the other for the lack of success in 20 years of negotiations interrupted by bouts of violence.

Earlier Sunday, the Israeli Cabinet voted 13-7, with two abstentions, to approve in principle the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners. The release is a key part of the Kerry-brokered deal to restart peace talks.

The State Department said Kerry called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after the Cabinet vote and invited them to send teams to Washington.

State Department spokeswoman Jan Psaki said the teams would meet Monday and Tuesday to "develop a procedural plan for how the parties can proceed with the negotiations in the coming months."

Talks on a final peace deal are to last six to nine months.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and Abbas aide Mohammed Shtayyeh will represent the Palestinians, and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and adviser Yitzhak Molcho will attend for Israel.

Netanyahu, seeking to overcome stiff opposition from ultra-nationalists, told his Cabinet that "resuming the political process at this time is important for Israel," noting that any deal would be submitted to a national referendum.

Erekat welcomed the vote on the prisoners as a "step toward peace," one he said is long overdue.

Negotiators made progress in previous rounds, and the outlines of a deal have emerged ? a Palestinian state in most of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, lands captured by Israel in 1967, with border adjustments to enable Israel to annex land with a majority of nearly 600,000 settlers.

Those negotiations broke down before the sides could tackle the most explosive issues, a partition of Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees and their descendants, now several million people.

Abbas remains leery of negotiating with Netanyahu, fearing any offer made by the hard-liner would fall far short of Palestinian demands, so he has insisted on a clear framework for negotiations.

Abbas said over the weekend that Kerry assured him the invitation to the negotiators will say border talks are based on the 1967 line ? though Netanyahu has not said whether he has dropped his long-standing opposition to that demand.

The preliminary talks in Washington are supposed to close the remaining gaps on the framework for talks, and they could well falter at that early point.

Israel's release of veteran prisoners could help Abbas persuade a skeptical Palestinian public that it's worthwhile returning to negotiations.

Netanyahu has repeatedly called for a resumption of negotiations that broke down in 2008, but he has not sketched the outlines of a deal he would be willing to strike, except to say he opposes a partition of Jerusalem.

In Sunday's Cabinet meeting, he pushed through the prisoner release despite opposition by two ministers in his Likud Party and by those from a main coalition partner, the pro-settler Jewish Home Party.

Outside the government complex, hundreds protested against a release. Among them were families of Israelis killed in attacks by Palestinian militants. Some held up pictures of their loved ones.

Naftali Bennett, the head of Jewish Home, briefly joined the protesters before attending the Cabinet meeting. "It's a hard day, the decision was made and I hope we won't pay a horrible price for this in the future," he said after the vote.

In the West Bank and Gaza, some relatives of prisoners anxiously awaited word. "Now there is a big relief," said Walid Abu Muhsen, 45, whose brother Jamal has been in prison for the past 22 years for killing an Israeli farmer.

The first disagreements emerged just hours after the Cabinet vote, reflecting the hostility and deep mistrust between the two sides.

Under the deal brokered by Kerry, Israel is supposed to free 104 prisoners who carried out attacks before the first interim peace agreements of the early 1990s.

Palestinian negotiators handed Kerry a list of 104 prisoners, arrested between 1983 and 1994. They said Kerry assured them Israel would release the prisoners in four stages over several months, with each release linked to progress in negotiations.

Among the 104 prisoners on the Palestinian list are two dozen who either have Israeli citizenship or come from Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem. In the past, Israeli media have said Israel would not free them.

On Sunday evening, an official in Netanyahu's office said that no Israeli Arabs are among the 104 whose release was authorized by the Cabinet. Asked to explain the discrepancy, he said Israel holds more than 104 "pre-Oslo" prisoners, suggesting the two sides apply different definitions.

Issa Qarakeh, the Palestinian minister of prisoner affairs, responded angrily.

"The agreement with Kerry was that all the pre-Oslo prisoners, including Israeli Arabs and east Jerusalem residents, will be released," he said. "If they (Israelis) exclude any of them, there will be a problem that might hinder the talks."

Israeli analyst Yossi Alpher said that a prisoner release in stages gives Netanyahu additional leverage during negotiations.

"Netanyahu has given himself a carrot that he can hold out to the Palestinians," he said. "Netanyahu can refuse to release the later batches if there's no progress."

(AP) ? When Cati Holland checked her email a few weeks ago, she was surprised to find a message saying she was eligible for compensation for her grandmother's Berlin store that was seized by the Nazis more than 70 years ago.

It wasn't spam or a phishing attempt or even a legitimate note from a German official working to track down victims and their heirs. Rather, it was from an Israel-based social media genealogy company that is using the Internet to help match property stolen by the Nazis to heirs of the victims.

"My grandmother told me so many stories about the store ? about the beautiful dresses and fancy hats they made, the wealthy customers who wore them," Holland, 75, told The Associated Press by phone from Hadera, Israel.

"But we always thought everything had been lost after my parents fled the Nazis. It never even occurred to us to claim any kind of restitution. I was completely surprised about that email."

Since the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945, Germany has paid around 70 billion euros ($92 billion) in compensation to the victims of the Holocaust. More than two million people have received lump sum payments or an ongoing monthly pension. The state of Israel has received around 1.7 billion euros ($2.2 billion), according to the German finance ministry.

Part of the compensation was earmarked for the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, a private New York-based organization that works to secure restitution for survivors and their heirs. Descendants can come forward to claim their family's assets until the end of 2014 if they find their original property on a recently released list by the Claims Conference, called the Late Applicants Fund.

Over the years, the search for the heirs has become more complicated because most of the Holocaust survivors have died. Descendants also don't always have detailed knowledge of their family's former assets.

But the rise of social media has offered new opportunities to track heirs and close the books on one of the darkest chapters of German history.

"We are only just seeing the huge impact that social media will have on Holocaust history," said Robert-Jan Smits, the director-general of the European Union's commission for research and design. "We are moving from dusty archives to digitized databases."

One of the driving forces behind the new push has been Gilad Japhet, CEO and founder of Israel-based MyHeritage, a social media website with about 70 million registered users worldwide that lets individuals build their own family trees online.

A few months back, Japhet read a report about the Claims Conference's list of over 40,000 buildings, stores and factories that could not be matched with their original owners. Japhet matched some names on the list to the millions of names that users had posted on MyHeritage's family trees online.

"I thought my chances of finding any of the names on the website of MyHeritage were not looking good since experts have been searching for them for decades. But I still wanted to give it a chance," Japhet said. "I chose some very rare names from the list and to my surprise the second name I put in was already a match."

Japhet put together a team of five employees and had them write a computer program that automatically matches the names on the Claims Conference's list with those on the virtual family trees. So far, they have been able to match about 150 names on the list with names on the family trees. They expect to continue working on this project for several more months.

In the case of Cati Holland, MyHeritage initially contacted her son-in-law Eran Karoly. He had posted a family tree which included Recha Cohn, Holland's grandmother and the owner of the Berlin store, which was located on the fashionable Kurfuerstendamm boulevard in the western part of the city. Holland's grandparents escaped to South America shortly after the Nazis took over in the early 1930s and ended up in Israel many years later.

Holland filed an application for restitution to the Claims Conference and is now waiting for a response. The level of compensation depends on various factors, such as the value of the property and how many people will apply until 2014.

"I filled out the forms and sent in birth certificates and several photos," Holland said.

The Claims Conference itself says it has "received hundreds of applications" for the Late Applicants Fund but can't say for sure how many of them were due to MyHeritage.

Applicants who qualify for restitution will have to wait until the program's deadline on December 31, 2014, the Claims Conference's chairman Reuven Merhav wrote in an email.

As for Japhet and his team, they have made clear to the claimants that they don't want any money in return for their efforts.

"In my emails to the users, I always write that we don't want any money for doing this, nor part of any restitution they will get," said Japhet. "We do this as a mitzvah ? which in Judaism is a good deed."
