Westboro Baptist Church Says It Will Picket Vigil For Connecticut School Shooting Victims

The Westboro Baptist Church, the controversial group known for protesting outside funerals of slain U.S. service members, announced that it will picket a vigil for the victims of Friday's Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the second largest mass killing in American history.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the group and, like most members of the organization, a relative of the group's founder, Fred Phelps, announced on Twitter on Saturday the group's plan "to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment."

It is unclear when the group plans to protest, although a tweet from Margie Phelps implied that it would be during a vigil that will be attended by President Barack Obama on Sunday evening.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church say that America is being punished for its acceptance of gays and lesbians. In recent days, Phelps family members have sent tweets about the Connecticut shooting that have said "God sent the shooter."

Not surprisingly, the group's announcement was met with resistance online. A Change.org petition asking for Connecticut officials to prevent the group from protesting has been launched, and users of the social news and link sharing site Reddit have been discussing ways to stage a counter-protest.

A Facebook event that calls for "counter-activity" to "keep any hatred from touching" the grieving families has over 10,000 attendees, but because of a bomb threat in Newtown on Sunday, the event has been cancelled.

Anonymous, the loosely affiliated group of Internet "hacktivists," said that it had hacked the group's website and released personal information about the group's members, according to The Inquisitr.

The Southern Poverty Law Center calls the Westboro Baptist Church "arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America," while the Anti-Defamation League calls it "a small virulently homophobic, anti-Semitic hate group."

In 2011, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church, saying that the right to picket funerals was protected under the First Amendment. President Obama earlier this year, however, signed legislation that said that protests must be held 300 feet from military funerals.

Erectile Dysfunction Could Be Linked With Heart Disease

Concerns around erectile dysfunction typically focus on a man's inability to have sex. As serious a problem as this is, studies point to a more devastating issue that could be behind having difficulty maintaining an erection: heart disease.

Research has connected erectile dysfunction with heart disease in men between the ages of 30 to 60 for years, but it is still not commonly known among the public. "You hear about men who pass away from heart disease," began Dr. Kevin Billups, director of Johns Hopkins Hospital's Integrative Men?s Health Program, "and their wives find Viagra [in their belongings] and they didn't even know they had a problem."

For many men, experiencing erectile dysfunction is the first signal of risk factors which, if unchecked, can lead to heart disease, according to doctors. "The likelihood of having heart disease at some point is two to three times higher in those who have ED than those who don?t," said Dr. Mehdi Shishehbor, a cardiology specialist at Cleveland Clinic.

But why would a problem affecting your penis signal a larger problem with your heart? "The penile arteries are much smaller than the arteries that supply blood to the heart, brain or lower extremities, and will block faster," explained Dr. Billups. "Erectile dysfunction will often appear as a symptom years before the heart attack. The other reason is that the penis is more sensitive [than other organs] to early changes associated with increased risk of heart disease, such as inflammation and oxidative stress."

Coronary heart disease occurs when the arteries around the heart harden and narrow, making it more difficult for much-needed blood to reach the heart muscles. A number of variables (high cholesterol, hypertension, smoking and/or diabetes, for example) cause this hardening, which can lead to chest pain or even a heart attack.

"The same process can happen in the pelvis," Dr. Shishehbor explained. "The same risk factors that apply to coronary artery disease are the same risk factors that apply to blockages in the penis. Over the years blockages form and prevent blood from getting to the penis. In order to get an erection we need blood flow to the penis.

"As you age and if you don?t take care of your risk factors -- if you smoke, don?t eat healthy, don?t control your blood pressure," he continued, "those things can lead to the same process that leads to blockages in the heart and can cause blockages in the penis."

If a man notices he has issues maintaining an erection, he should go to his primary care physician to get checked out, both doctors said.

"A lot of times I?ll pick up that their waist circumference is wider than 40 inches, and that they have high blood pressure or chloesterol problems," all risk factors for heart disease, said Dr. Billups. "ED is the symptom that gets the guys' attention."

"Your cholesterol should be treated aggressively," added Dr. Shishehbor. "Your diabetes, if you have it, should be controlled. You decide to stop smoking -- obviously you should pick up a healthy lifestyle, improving your exercise and your eating habits."

Once the risk factors are addressed, ED can then be treated in the ways most of us are familiar with: pills, vacuum pumps, injections and the like.

Getting the problem addressed as soon as you notice that you're having a problem maintaining an erection is key to avoiding a potentially tragic -- and potentially avoidable -- end.

"Don?t get a pill from your buddy," Billups said. "Go and get checked out. Fixing it is easy... if we can save your life."

Geminid meteor show reaches peak

The annual Geminids meteor shower peaked overnight into Friday morning.

The meteors appeared to radiate from a point near the star Castor, in the constellation Gemini.

In the northern hemisphere, that was westward and nearly overhead in the early hours of Friday.

Many sky watchers saw dozens of "shooting stars" per hour, made easier to see by darkness provided by the "new moon" phase.

The shower comes about each year as the Earth passes through the path of an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon.

The asteroid leaves behind a trail of rocky debris that the Earth ploughs into each year - debris moving at 35km per second that burns up in the atmosphere in what can be spectacular displays.

According to the International Meteor Organization, the "radiant" - the apparent point from which the meteors seem to come - was visible from sunset in high northern latitudes, rising at about midnight local time in the southern hemisphere.

The Geminids are less well-known relative to other annual meteoric performances such as the Perseids, in part because December weather often threatens a clear view of the show.

When a child dies - sharing my grief story for those in Newtown, CT ...

Yesterday's horrific story of violence and murder shook all of us throughout the country. We cried, we hugged our loved ones and we felt compassion for this town, this school and most of all these parents. For some of us, the compassion was a bit more, it was empathy as we remembered our own grief and felt again the pain of the loss of a child.

No two stories of loss are ever the same just as no two children are the same. Those of us who have mourned the loss of a child feel a bit more acutely the pain that those parents are feeling. My infant son Matthew was born with congenital heart disease and died on the operating table trying to fix him four days later. He was not murdered, he did not suffer fear before his death and it was no one's fault. None the less, I was bereft after he died. My brain was so filled with pain that I could handle few other thoughts. My arms ached, my gut ached and I thought I would never recover.

My lowest moment was laying in the bathtub, howling like a wounded primal animal, screaming to my Mother, who had died a year before, to take care of my son. Once I decided to get out of that tub my grief work and progress was so slow that I think it could be measured only at a molecular level. I was lucky, I had a surviving cherished 3 year old daughter, Emily, who gave me the motivation to get out of that tub and that dark dark place in my life.

I had fabulous friends some of whom gave me bits of themselves and helped me get through each day and thrive. I had other friends who just didn't get it, one who whined that she wanted the old Kathy back. What I tried to communicate to her was that when you have a child who lives, it changes your life forever. It's the exact same thing with a child who dies, it changes you and your life forever. I needed my friends and their molecules. Three of us started a chapter of Compassionate Friends in our area and I was active in that group for five years. Running those meetings and doing the newsletter literally saved my life. Helping others was what helped me.

I also turned to the Arts. I sought out authors, poets, sculptures, painters and musicians who had expressed the same grief in song, stories, books and other non verbal ways of communication. I turned to my quilts. I made a quilt for Matthew, I called it Sailing Away. As I stitched each sailboat, I tried to quilt in some sadness that would sail away from me. Both of my girls adore this quilt and it has been wrapped around them for comfort throughout the years.

I was also lucky enough to be able to parent an additional child. I could not conceive again for various medical reasons but five years later, my beloved Shelby came to me from Korea. This is when I felt I became whole again, that my arms no longer ached, I felt healed. And since then, my life has continued to improve and I have flourished. In my heart, Matthew will always live and he made me a better person who so wishes to reach out to the parents who wail with sorrow today.

I have known other bereaved parents who were not as lucky as I was. Grief is an infinite void within you and some parents I have known have sought a finite source to fill that emptiness. No amount of shopping, eating, drinking, drugs or bitterness will do it. You have to slog through that horrible pain and feel it and seek your own way through it. My ex-husband was not one of those who did. Marriage is another victim when a child dies, 70% fail afterwards and up to 90% if the death is accidental. My ex sought his refuge in a bottle and years after our divorce, finally drank himself to death.

I wish I could make a quilt big enough to wrap up every hurting parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt and uncle. I wish I could provide them with even one molecule of healing, share with them one tiny atom of hope and love.

My love and compassion to go out to them and all bereaved parents.

More Snow Could Mean Less Ice for Antarctic

Increased snowfall that's expected in Antarctica as the climate warms is likely to send more ice into the sea, new research finds. The effect is so strong that additional sea-level rise caused by extra snowfall is greater than the rise caused by extra heat melting the ice directly.

The new study comes shortly after a recent analysis found that ice melt in Greenland and Antarctica has contributed nearly a half-inch to sea-level rise since 1992. Antarctic ice sheets once thought protected from melting are also more vulnerable than expected, researchers reported in May.

Antarctica's response to climate change has always been uncertain, in part because a warming atmosphere can hold more moisture than a cooler one. More moisture is expected to bring more snow to Antarctica, which could potentially offset the melting of ice caused by warmer air and ocean water.

Now, that offset doesn't look so likely. Ricarda Winkelmann and her colleagues at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany used computer modeling to look at how the Antarctic would respond to various climate-warming scenarios. They found that greater snowfall actually enhances ice loss rather than offsetting it.

"Our simulations under future climate scenarios show that between 30 percent and 65 percent of the ice gain from enhanced snowfall are compensated by an increase of ice loss," Winkelmann told LiveScience.

The reason: When snow falls, it increases the elevation of the land or ice it falls on. In Antarctica, snow falling on the floating ice shelves weighs them down, making them sink more heavily in the water. The land doesn't have that type of elasticity, so the same amount of snowfall on the landmass of Antarctica causes 10 times the elevation change as on floating ice.

The result is a steep slope from land to ice, the natural equivalent of a Slip 'n Slide for Antarctica's ice. Ice flows faster from the continent toward the sea, resulting in sea-level rise. [Ice World: Gallery of Awe-Inspiring Glaciers]

How bad this is depends on how warm the world gets. The researchers used several scenarios based on how much extra warmth Earth will hang onto with different concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The least dire is an extra 2.6 Watts per square meter by 2100, while the worst scenario is an extra 8.5 Watts per square meter by that time. The researchers estimate that in a 2.6 Watts/square meter scenario, Antarctic ice will cause the equivalent of 0.26 feet (0.08 meters) in sea-level rise thanks to extra snowfall. In the worst-case scenario, the sea-level rise jumps to 1.8 feet (0.56 m).

Those numbers are between 100 percent and 200 percent of the ice loss caused by surface and ocean warmth combined, Winkelmann said. By 2500, ice loss caused by snowfall in the warmest scenario could hit 4 feet (1.45 m).

Despite the fact that these findings hold along the entire Antarctic coast, there is still lots of uncertainty about Antarctica's future, Winkelmann said.

"We need to make further steps towards a full assessment of sea-level rise ? globally and locally," she said.
