UK police detain two near home of singer Joss Stone (omg!)

LONDON (Reuters) - Police in southwest England have arrested and detained two men on suspicion of conspiracy to rob and murder near the home of chart-topping soul singer Joss Stone, they said in a statement on Wednesday.

Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted by suspicious locals and arrested the pair in the town of Cullompton, in the county of Devon, on Monday morning.

The men, aged 30 and 33, were initially held for possessing an offensive weapon and being equipped for burglary and theft.

"As a result of enquiries the two men are now being detained for the further offences of conspiracy to rob and conspiracy to murder," the police statement said.

"Major crime detectives are continuing to investigate."

The Sun newspaper reported that the men were involved in a suspected plot to kidnap Stone, 24, who has sold around 11 million albums and has a personal fortune estimated at nine million pounds.

Police did not name Stone in the statement.

But Detective Inspector Steve Parker, who is leading the investigation, said: "The two men in custody had in their possession information relating to an individual in the Cullompton area and items which lead us to suspect that they may have intended to commit a criminal offence.

"Police enquiries continue and the men remain in custody. We're unable to say anymore at this time but I would like to thank the local residents for reporting the suspicious car.

"Our officers are currently carrying out reassurance patrols and it's important to stress that no properties have been burgled and no individuals have been harmed."

A spokesman for the singer said she was aware of the arrests and was being kept informed of developments. It was not immediately clear whether she was at her home in the Cullompton area on Monday.

Stone, who attended the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April, is due to go on tour next month.

As humans, we all make mistakes. It is human nature to do so, and cannot be prevented each and every time. When it comes to the barbecue, this rule is no different. We often make mistakes that we do not even realize until we taste our food, or something potentially dangerous happens.

Some mistakes just mean that the food you cook is not going to taste very good, while others could potentially mean a trip to the hospital, or a visit from your claims representative on your home insurance policy. No matter the severity of the mistake, you should do your best to try to avoid them whenever possible.

Barbecue Safety

We have covered this subject in other postings, but we cannot stress the importance of it strongly enough. You must properly prepare the meat you are cooking, before cooking it. You should never attempt to cook meat on a grill when it is still frozen, or even partially frozen. Thaw your meat by sitting it in the refrigerator about 12 to 24 hours before you plan on cooking it, or by thawing it in a microwave.

Once meat is cooked, never put it back in on the same plate you had it on when it was raw especially chicken! This could cause the spread of many unwanted illnesses.

Cooking with charcoal lighter fluid can be good or bad. The lighter fluid will cause the food you are cooking to taste different then with other types of grills. Alternatively, attempting to light the barbecue by not using lighter fluid may cause a lot of frustration due to the fact that charcoal can be difficult if not impossible to light without lighter fluid.

Never poke your meat while it is cooking. Poking holes in meat will cause the juice inside to leak out into the bottom of the grill. Not only will this make your food dry and unappealing in the end, but it also could potentially ruin your barbeque grill. At the very least, it will cause a buildup of unwanted grease and juices on your grill, which will make cleanup harder.

Once the meat is on the brbecue grill, try not to open the lid too many times. Each time you open the lid, you change the temperature in the grill. The constant change in temperature and the air flow will cause your meat to dry up quickly.

Remember that the higher the heat is not always the better. While it is ok to quickly cook food, turning the heat up will just cause the meat to dry up and potentially burn.

While using tin foil or aluminum foil will make cleaning easier, it will cause your food to have more of a fried taste then a grilled taste.

Dangerous Barbecue Mistakes

Never, under any circumstance, should you leave a grill alone when it is in use. Grilling does have fire involved, and accidents can happen. Fire spreads quickly, so being aware of your grill could mean the difference between a small fire that is quickly extinguished, and a visit from the fire department. We have seen only recently, houses burned to the ground by careless use of the barbecue

Never place a hot barbecue grill against a wall, even if the fire is already completely out. A hot grill can heat up an exterior wall to the point of combustion. Also, do not put the grill cover back on until you are sure that the grill is completely cool.

Your barbecue grill should be cleaned after each and every use, no exceptions. While no one likes cleaning the grill, it is essential for the life and safety of your grill. If you allow your grill to sit dirty, not only are you causing a potential fire and health hazard, but you are ultimately making it harder on yourself when it does come time to clean your grill.

Make sure that your barbecue grill is completely cold before cleaning it. Spraying oil and cleaning agents on a hot surface could cause it to ignite. Be careful, because the grill may seem cool, but may still be hot in certain areas. You do not want to sustain a burn.

A cross-country search for the grand old trees that once provided shade and shelter for America?s greatest authors.

In his book about historically significant trees, Richard Horan has answered one of the great questions of this modern age: How do people get information without the Internet?

If you are Richard Horan, you hop in your car and drive around looking for it. He visits the California coast and the Louisiana Gulf; lawns in Mississippi and New York; parks in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Virginia; wilderness in New Hampshire and Vermont. At each stop Horan gets out of his car and chats with the residents. He learns about their lives and their neighborhoods. He finds out what they know. Most importantly for his quest, he scrapes together details about the famous personages who lived there. For this is his self-assigned mission: to experience America?s history by visiting the homes of significant figures ? mostly writers ? and collecting seeds from the trees that inhabit the grounds.

In an opening scene of Seeds: One Man?s Serendipitous Journey to Find the Trees That Inspired Famous American Writers from Faulkner to Kerouac, Welty to Wharton, Horan considers the basswood tree that has stood outside Abraham Lincoln?s home in Springfield, Ill., at least since 1860. ?The tree had known one of the greatest and most complex figures in American history,? Horan writes. ?Had Lincoln ever learned against it and pondered his future? Surely he must?ve dreamed under that tree, dreamed of a better life for his family, for his fellow citizens, black and white. Suddenly those seeds in my pocket from that touchstone felt like pennies from heaven.?

Not all the witness trees are as fruitful as Lincoln?s basswood. As often as not, Horan finds that the original trees that grew on the property are long gone, or that it?s the wrong season to collect seeds, or access to the site is closed. No matter. Horan?s journey is mostly emotional and psychological anyway. For instance, in the section on Jiddu Krishnamurti, Horan fails to collect seeds from the California pepper tree under which the Indian mystic had his awakening; yet, he effectively describes how Krishnamurti?s teaching showed him a path toward wisdom and compassion.

Later, Horan poetically describes his reaction to the geography of the Gettysburg battlefield: ?America?s heart is there beating steadily on the rocky promontory of Little Round Top, on the steep grassy slopes of the East Cemetery Hill; within the boulders of the Devil?s Den, in the skeletal remains of the Copse of Woods, and in the tulip trees, sycamores, maples, and oaks. Because Gettysburg was where America?s heart once stopped beating.?

Passages such as these, in which the author?s thoughts turn philosophical, provide a welcome counterpoint to the often-mundane details of Horan?s travelogue. Much of the rest of ?Seeds? falls somewhere between a guidebook, a survey course of American literature, and a set of serialized e-mails of the kind that an earnest, ponytailed uncle might distribute on the family listserv. In addition to providing a general context for the personages he writes about, Horan includes several of his own poems, descriptions of friends and family, and musings on industrialization and the environment.

The result can be somewhat haphazard ? or, as Horan would have it, serendipitous. As such, readers seeking a page-turner or rigorous investigation may find the ideas in ?Seeds? more scattered than scrupulously planted. But Horan?s wide-and-far approach does allow the reader to pick up and put down the book as the mood strikes. Indeed, with its loose theme, shoe leather reporting, and personal reflection, ?Seeds? comes to feel like the most modern of media: not so much a book as a blog.
