Yale under fire for new campus in restrictive Singapore

NEW HAVEN (Reuters) - For more than 300 years, Yale University has prided itself on training top students to question and analyze, to challenge and critique.

Now, Yale is seeking to export those values by establishing the first foreign campus to bear its name, a liberal arts college in Singapore that is set to open this summer. The ambitious, multimillion-dollar project thrills many in the Yale community who say it will help the university maintain its prestige and build global influence.

But it has also stirred sharp criticism from faculty and human-rights advocates who say it is impossible to build an elite college dedicated to free inquiry in an authoritarian nation with heavy restrictions on public speech and assembly.

"Yale's motto is 'Lux et veritas,' or 'Light and truth,'" said Michael Fischer, a Yale professor of computer science. "We're going into a place with severe curbs on light and truth ... We're redefining the brand in a way that's contrary to Yale's values."

Yale President Richard Levin describes the new venture as a chance to extend Yale's tradition of nurturing independent thinkers to a dynamic young nation at the crossroads of Asia. In the 19th century, Yale scholars fanned out to launch dozens of American colleges, Levin noted in a 2010 memo presenting the concept to faculty. "Yale could influence the course of 21st century education as profoundly," he wrote.

Levin, who spent years expanding Yale's campus in New Haven before initiating the Singapore project in 2010, has announced plans to retire at the end of the academic year. His successor, Yale Provost Peter Salovey, also supports the Singapore venture.

Working with the National University of Singapore, or NUS, Yale is building a comprehensive liberal arts college from scratch. The school will offer majors from anthropology to urban studies, electives from fractal geometry to moral reasoning, and a rich menu of extracurricular activities -- sports, drama, debate, even a juggling club.

Scheduled to open this summer with 150 students, it is slated to grow to about 1,000 undergraduates living in a high-rise campus now under construction.

While American universities have been venturing overseas for decades, they have mostly offered tightly focused degree programs, often for graduate students. The closest analogy to the Yale project may be New York University's branch campuses now under construction in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai.

But the new NYU campuses are extensions of the university. The Yale venture, which targets top students from around the globe, is an unusual hybrid.

It will be called Yale-NUS College. It will draw some faculty -- and its inaugural president, Pericles Lewis -- straight from New Haven. Students will spend the summer before freshman year in New Haven, attending seminars with Yale faculty. When they graduate, they will be welcomed into the Association of Yale Alumni.

Yet Yale officials are emphatic that the new school is not a branch campus. The degrees it issues will not be Yale degrees.

"It is not Yale," said Charles Bailyn, an astronomy professor on leave from Yale to serve as the founding dean of Yale-NUS.

OPPORTUNITY OR "FRANKENYALE"?

The new college will be funded entirely by the Singapore government, which will also subsidize tuition. Singapore citizens will pay about $18,000 a year, including room and board. International students will pay about $43,000 unless they secure a discount by committing to work for a Singapore company for three years after graduation.

Yale and Singapore will get an equal number of seats on the new college's governing board -- but Singapore's education minister must approve all the Yale nominees.

The arrangement exposes Yale to risk because its name is on the college, yet the university does not have control over the end product, said Richard Edelstein, who studies trends in higher education at the University of California at Berkeley. One angry member of Yale's faculty, Christopher Miller, a professor of French and African American studies, has dubbed the venture "Frankenyale."

Those involved in the project say the novel structure is a boon that will enable educational experimentation, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary seminars and student research. It's a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a new college program from the ground up," said Yale anthropologist Bernard Bate, who has signed on to teach in Singapore.

He and others say they will bring the best of their new approach back to New Haven. And they contend that fears about censorship in Singapore are wildly overblown.

That issue came to the fore last spring, when Yale faculty voted 100 to 69 for a resolution raising concern about the venture in light of "the history of lack of respect for civil and political rights" in Singapore.

Human Rights Watch, the international advocacy group, subsequently accused Yale of "betraying the spirit of the university." This month the American Association of University Professors weighed in, expressing concern about the project's implications for academic freedom.

Singapore, an island nation in southeast Asia, is a democracy but has been dominated by one political party since securing independence from Britain half a century ago. In the name of stability and security, the government restricts public demonstrations to a corner of one park and heavily regulates news and entertainment, according to the U.S. State Department.

Last year a British author was jailed for writing a book critical of Singapore's judiciary. This spring the government prevented an opposition politician from leaving the country to speak at the Oslo Freedom Forum.

Still, Yale faculty working on the new college said they had spoken with foreign professors teaching on other campuses in Singapore and came away convinced that academic freedom would be respected.

George Bishop, a Yale PhD who been teaching psychology at the National University of Singapore since 1991, says he has never felt restricted. In a class on the AIDS epidemic, he and his students freely discuss how Singapore's anti-sodomy laws hinder the nation's public-health response.

"We criticize the government all the time in class," said Bishop, who has joined the faculty of the new college.

PLENTY OF APPLICANTS

Yet Yale-NUS will not be free and open in the way American students may expect.

Singapore bans speech deemed to promote racial or religious strife. As long as they toe that line, students will be free to hear speakers and express views inside campus buildings. But many outdoor assemblies will require a government permit, Yale-NUS President Lewis said. Singapore law defines "assembly" quite broadly, to include a single protester holding a sign or an open-air debate.

"Can you march on City Hall?" asked Bailyn, the Yale-NUS dean. No, he answered -- but said that didn't trouble him, as "that's not really an educational matter." Bailyn said he had been promised complete freedom with "the core mission of the college -- researching, teaching, unfettered discussion."

Indeed, Yale-NUS faculty say they expect Singapore to be cautious about interfering with the new college for fear of provoking an incident and prompting Yale to withdraw its name.

"We know what a liberal arts education is, what intellectual freedom is," said Keith Darden, a political scientist at Yale, "and we'll accept nothing less than that for ourselves and our students."

Under the philosophical questions lies a pragmatic one: Will the new college succeed?

For all its wealth, Singapore has not always proved an ideal marketplace for higher education. Australia's University of New South Wales opened a campus in Singapore in 2007 -- only to shut it after one semester because of low enrollment. This fall, NYU announced it would close its graduate film school in Singapore because of financial trouble.

Other American ventures in Singapore have done better, including a music conservatory developed by Johns Hopkins University.

Interest in Yale-NUS is running high. Almost 2,600 students from around the globe have applied for the initial 150 spots. Several dozen have already been accepted -- among them, Singaporean students who suggest Yale's faculty might do well to back off the criticism and trust in the value of the liberal arts education they hold so dear.

"Ideological purity and moral righteousness from these critics will not make Singapore a free society, but education and the spread of ideas will," Jared Yeo, a Singapore native accepted to Yale-NUS, wrote on the college's blog.

Perhaps the most pointed critique of the New Haven protests came from E-Ching Ng, a Singaporean who earned an undergraduate degree at Yale and remained on campus to study linguistics. In a column in the Yale Daily News last spring, she urged faculty to respect the rules Singapore has developed to maintain public order.

"Qur'an burning is illegal in Singapore, and we like it that way," she wrote. "We prioritize our values differently, and different doesn't mean wrong. At least, that's what I learned from a Yale liberal arts education."

Vikings Reach NFL Playoffs: Adrian Peterson Powers Minnesota Past Packers

MINNEAPOLIS ? Adrian Peterson picked up the Minnesota Vikings and gave them a thrilling ride to the playoffs, where the next stop on this improbable journey is, yes, Green Bay.

This game was so full of action, intrigue and tension they're going to stage it again next weekend.

Peterson finished 9 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record, but he still powered the Vikings past the Packers 37-34 Sunday with 199 yards to set up a rematch at Lambeau Field in a first-round playoff game.

"I told myself to come into this game focused on one thing, and that's winning," Peterson said.

Peterson rumbled around the left side of the line for a 27-yard gain in the closing seconds, his career-high 34th carry exactly one year after reconstructive surgery on his left knee. That set up Blair Walsh's 29-yard field goal as time expired and put the Vikings (10-6) in the postseason after consecutive last-place finishes.

"For our guys to be as resilient as they were, it has you swelling with pride," coach Leslie Frazier said.

The division champion Packers (11-5) dropped to the NFC's No. 3 seed. Their five-game winning streak against the Vikings ended.

"I had a feeling that we had the game in the bag the whole game," Vikings cornerback Chris Cook said. "It was just a vibe that I had on the sideline, in how we were carrying ourselves."

Aaron Rodgers completed 28 of 40 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions, connecting with Jordy Nelson from 2 yards to tie the game with 2:54 remaining. But Christian Ponder threw for three scores, including one to Peterson.

Ponder went 16 for 28 for 234 yards, including a 65-yard zinger in stride to Jarius Wright midway through the fourth quarter that set up Ponder's third touchdown toss.

"It's disappointing. A lot of us wanted that extra week," Rodgers said.

Peterson finished with 2,097 yards, becoming the seventh player in NFL history to reach the 2,000 mark. He had to work for it, pulling out all the cutbacks, stutter-steps and spins he could find in his exceptional skill set. His longest run was only 28 yards against a defense geared to slow him down, and the first contact often came at, near or behind the line of scrimmage.

"It wasn't meant to happen, or it would've happened. Not to say it doesn't hurt, because it does," Peterson said of Dickerson's 28-year-old record. "But we came in here tonight and accomplished the ultimate goal, and that was getting a win and punching our ticket to the playoffs."

The Packers cut the lead to 27-24 late in the third quarter on a touchdown reception by James Jones. The on-field ruling was a fumble at the goal line, triggering an automatic review. Because the Packers threw the challenge flag after the replay process began, however, they were only penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, not prevented from benefiting from the overturned call. That's what happened to Detroit infamously on Thanksgiving, when a disputed score by Houston was prevented from review.

After posting a 9-23 record over the last two years, the Vikings made so many strides in 2012 that the season was already a success. But no NFL team would ever be satisfied by finishing in defeat against a division rival, and the emotion and energy behind the quest was palpable all afternoon.

"It took us a little while to adjust to the crowd noise, and we didn't get going," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "That usually happens up here. This is a tough place to play, no doubt. We anticipated this being the loudest environment of the year. They pumped it in here pretty good today."

The NFC North was sewn up by the Packers two weeks earlier. Even though the bye remained in the balance the top seed didn't do the Packers any good last season. They went 15-1 and lost their opener at home to the eventual champion Giants.

Rodgers played without injured leading receiver Randall Cobb, so Greg Jennings was the main guy, grabbing eight passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. But the Vikings sacked Rodgers five times, recovering a fumble on one of them at midfield to set up a third-quarter touchdown.

Rodgers has 24 touchdowns, only four interceptions and a 70 percent completion rate over 10 career starts against the Vikings. His poise, arm strength and savvy came through clear against them as much as any other team. Plus, cornerback Antoine Winfield's aggravated hand injury kept him on the sideline for most of the game.

Just as Ponder capably complemented Peterson, DuJuan Harris came out of nowhere to provide Rodgers some help. Green Bay has been proving lately it's not a one-sided offense, either, and Harris rushed 14 times for 70 yards

But this was Peterson's show. Second-and-27? He surged off right tackle and bounced outside for 28 yards on a drive that ended with his second touchdown, a 2-yard reception that pushed the lead to 27-17 in the third quarter. The "MVP" chants from the crowd rang out in earnest after that.

NOTES: Cobb's absence meant the Packers went without a 1,000-yard receiver for the first time since 2003. Cobb finished with 954 yards. ... Vikings WR Jerome Simpson was woozy after an end-zone collision in the third quarter, falling back down after trying to get up the first time. He passed concussion tests and returned to the game.

Blast in Pakistan's Karachi kills six on bus, 48 hurt

Producers of Katie Holmes's Broadway play Dead Accounts, a dark family comedy by Theresa Rebeck, have announced that the show will be closing nearly two months early, wrapping up on January 6 instead of the planned February 24. Obviously the press release about the matter doesn't mention any reasons, but we can assume the show is closing because of poor ticket sales. January is a notoriously difficult frozen tundra for many a Broadway show to traverse, and Dead Accounts just didn't have it. So the cast is being spared the agony of trying. ...

With Portrait Photography To Make Moments Last Forever ? Arts and ...

Speaking of portrait photography, it refers to the photographing of a person capturing his or her features, expressions, moods and to a certain extent the surroundings. The focus of a portrait is essentially on the face of the subject. Family portrait photography is what is generally referred to as a ?family photograph? where various family members are captured in different poses and settings.

The availability of affordable point and shoot digital cameras has ensured that every family is now able to capture their ?special? moments for posterity on their own but a trawl through the social networking sites or through some online albums will tell you how wrong amateur photographs can get even with the best of technology. You can read on to know more.

Professionals who specialize in the area of portrait photography are an assurance that the photographs for which they have been assigned will be exactly what you want. After all, portrait photographs are commissioned to mark special milestones in people?s lives such as baptism, the first birthday, beginning of school and of course graduation followed by other big days such as engagement, promotions and then retirement. These are all special moments to be cherished, treasured, shared and relived for a long time and the only way of doing this is through photographs.

Of course, you do have video filming, but let?s be honest, how many of us go back to the video recordings of the landmark moments of our lives? We prefer looking at the photographs, don?t we? Portraits of the older members of the family acquire a special significance and sentimental value when they are no longer with us and serve as reminders of the love and guidance that they provided in their lifetimes, hence it is important to have an experienced photographer take care of these important photos. Find a professional portrait photographer to meet your needs.

To continue in the same vein, whenever we have a family photograph taken by someone in the family, we usually notice a lot of flaws not to mention the missing family member who was behind the camera at the moment. Family gatherings are very special and emotional occasions which allow for a lot of beautiful moments to be captured on film. Once again, only a professional with experience in Family Portrait Photography can do justice to them. ?Posed? and ?Natural? moments are blended together by a professional photographer through adept handling of the camera and lighting to create an evocative set of family photos to shared and framed and put up at home to be admired by relatives and friends. And as an added bonus, every member of the family gets to be in the picture!

(AP) ? The State Department has issued a revised Haiti travel advisory, warning Americans planning to travel to the Caribbean island nation about robbery, lawlessness, infectious disease and poor medical facilities.

"U.S. citizens have been victims of violent crime, including murder and kidnapping, predominantly in the Port-au-Prince area. No one is safe from kidnapping, regardless of occupation, nationality, race, gender or age," the department said.

The new travel warning was released Friday to replace a less strongly worded advisory issued in June.

In recent months, travelers arriving in Port-au-Prince, the capital and largest city, on flights from the United States have been attacked and robbed after leaving the airport. This year, at least two U.S. citizens were shot and killed in robbery and kidnapping incidents, the State Department said.

"Haitian authorities have limited capacity to deter or investigate such violent acts or prosecute perpetrators," the department said.

The State Department also noted that while the incidents of cholera have declined, the disease persists in many areas of Haiti. Medical facilities, including ambulance services, are particularly weak.

"Thousands of U.S. citizens safely visit Haiti each year, but the poor state of Haiti's emergency response network should be carefully considered when planning travel. Travelers to Haiti are encouraged to use organizations that have solid infrastructure, evacuation and medical support options in place," the department said.

Analysis: U.N. confronts failure of diplomacy in Syria

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Attempts by the United Nations to end the bloody 21-month-old Syrian conflict through diplomacy have been a resounding failure and there is little reason to expect a quick change given the Russian-U.S. rift on Syria.

After a year of intensive diplomatic efforts by the world body, U.N.-Arab League peace mediator Lakhdar Brahimi of Algeria has made no more progress than his predecessor, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in getting the government and rebels to come to the negotiating table, or getting Russia and the United States to overcome their deep disagreements on Syria.

Brahimi heads to Moscow on Saturday to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the United Nations said, but expectations are low. Syria's opposition leader rejected an invitation from Russia to attend peace talks, which was a blow to Brahimi's efforts.

At the heart of the diplomatic roadblock is a seemingly unbreakable impasse on the U.N. Security Council, where Russia and the United States, both veto-wielding permanent members of the 15-nation group, are seeing their bilateral ties deteriorate.

There is no reason to expect anything different in early 2013. After three joint Russian-Chinese vetoes on Syria, the Security Council has all but given up on the issue.

"It's very depressing to be a party to failed diplomacy," a senior U.N. official told Reuters. "There's no end to the (Security Council) deadlock and as long as that deadlock remains, it's hard to make a difference beyond humanitarian aid, and that's not easy."

In addition to generally rocky relations between Washington and Moscow, Russia has strategic reasons for standing by Assad. He has been a staunch ally, a major purchaser of Russian arms and host to Russia's only warm-water naval port. But even Russia realizes Assad will likely be ousted sooner or later.

NO CEASEFIRE

Annan, the first U.N.-Arab League peace negotiator to try to end the escalating civil war, focused on getting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government and the opposition to agree to a ceasefire.

With neither side willing to lay down its weapons, a frustrated Annan announced his resignation in August, saying the divided Security Council had undermined his efforts. He urged Russia, China and Iran to do more to push for an end to the bloodshed.

Brahimi is concentrating on healing the rift between Russia and the United States as the conflict in Syria becomes increasingly gruesome and sectarian, U.N. officials and diplomats say.

Disagreements between the United States and Russia or China on the 15-nation Security Council are nothing new. They have had sharp differences on crises in Georgia, North Korea, Myanmar, Zimbabwe and elsewhere that have prevented the council from taking any meaningful action.

But the deadlock on Syria is especially frustrating for U.N. officials and diplomats, who complain the United Nations has been confined to the sidelines as the corpses pile higher.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has repeatedly urged countries to unite in support of Brahimi's efforts but that has not happened.

"We do not see any prospect of any end of violence or any prospect of political dialogue to start," Ban told reporters last week.

Brahimi is convinced that ending the U.S.-Russian rift is the key to unraveling the Gordian knot that has prevented a negotiated end to a war in which 44,000 people have died.

The crux of their disagreement is whether Assad should go now, as the rebels, Washington and the Europeans want, or later, as Moscow would prefer, after a period with a transitional leadership that could include members of Assad's government.

Russia has repeatedly said it is not wedded to Assad, although it has refused to abandon him.

"For (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, it's all about not compromising with America at the moment," a senior Western diplomat said.

WASHINGTON-MOSCOW TIES

The latest example of worsening U.S.-Russian ties is Moscow's new ban on U.S. adoptions of Russian children, a move that came in retaliation against U.S. human rights legislation aimed at Russia.

Diplomats and analysts say it is not Brahimi's fault that he has failed. The veteran Algerian diplomat played down hopes that he could succeed from the outset.

Richard Gowan of New York University said Brahimi's modest approach has restored some of the U.N. credibility that was lost while Annan was the Syria mediator.

"But (Brahimi's) current peace plan is at least half a year out of date," Gowan said. "The rebels simply will not buy it."

Brahimi is pushing for a transitional government and has suggested he wants to build on an international agreement signed in Geneva six months ago that envisioned a provisional body - which might include members of Assad's government as well as the opposition - leading the country to a new election.

His recycled peace plan has not made him popular with the rebels, who also have complained that the United States and Europeans have failed to provide them weapons, despite the West's clear desire to see Assad ousted. Diplomats say arms are reaching the rebels from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

The mainly Sunni Muslim Syrian rebels have seized the military initiative since June's Geneva meeting and the political opposition has ruled out any transitional government in which Assad, who is from Syria's Alawite minority, has a role.

Radwan Ziadeh of the opposition Syrian National Council dismissed Brahimi's proposal as "unrealistic and fanciful" and said a transitional government could not be built on the same "security and intelligence structure as the existing regime."

Some diplomats say Russia's influence on Syria is wildly exaggerated and that Assad is not going to compromise because he is fighting for his own and the Alawites' survival.

So where does that leave Russia?

"It's understood that Bashar al-Assad's regime will not last long," said Georgy Mirsky, a Middle East expert at the Institute for World Economy and International Relations in Moscow.

"But this does not mean that Russia is ready to join the West, the Turks and the Arabs and demand that Assad go? That would be senseless. Syria is lost (to Russia) anyway," he said.

At least Russia "will be able to say that we do not abandon our friends," Mirsky said.

New home sales hit highest rate since April 2010

15 hrs.

New single-family home sales accelerated in November to the fastest pace in 2 1/2 years and median sales price jumped from the same month in 2011, signs that the U.S. housing recovery is gaining some steam.

The Commerce Department said on Thursday sales climbed 4.4 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted 377,000-unit annual rate. That was in line with analysts' forecasts of a 378,000-unit annual pace.

Government data for new home sales are subject to substantial revisions. Indeed, the Commerce Department cut its estimate for sales in October by 7,000 to a 361,000-unit rate.

The annual sales pace for November was the quickest since April 2010.

This year, the housing sector has been point of strength in an economy beset by flagging business confidence and cooling demand abroad. The median home price of a new home rose to $246,200, up 14.9 percent from the same month in 2011.

New home building is expected to add to economic growth this year for the first time since 2005. The housing sector, however, remains a shadow of its former self.

The pace of new home sales is roughly a quarter of the all-time high clocked in July 2005 when a housing bubble was still inflating. Shortly thereafter, the bubble began to deflate, helping trigger the 2007-09 recession, which was the deepest downturn since the Great Depression.?

When In Need For Excellent Techniques Of Pest Control ...

When in need of excellent pest control Albuquerque is the right place to give priority. Pest control is the activity of regulating or managing pests, because they are considered detrimental to the economy, ecology or human health. This activity has existed since the discovery of the art of agriculture because there was need to keep produce from pests. Control of pests is important for increasing agricultural production.

Pests result directly from human actions and regulating such activities can significantly decrease them. Household pests such as raccoons and houseflies get attracted into homes by foods stored there. Tourists are seen feeding animals making them reliant on the food. In case that food is not availed, these animals act violently towards human beings in hope of being fed.

There are many techniques of managing pests. Some are more appropriate for particular organisms than others are. Biological pest management refers to the regulation of undesired organisms through regulating their natural parasites and/or predators. Taking for instance, flies of mosquitoes can be controlled by infecting their larvae using some varieties of bacteria. The ecosystem left behind is not affected whatsoever.

Eradication of breeding spots is the other effective way. This is attained through waste management and drainage of stagnant water. Wastes and garbage gives food to unwanted animals hence their elimination is important. Poisoning bait is also efficient for controlling animals like rats. It may however not be as effective if other sources of food are available. Poisoned baits can also be eaten by animals that were not the target, therefore causing unintended deaths. There are circumstances when even humans have been casualties of such cases.

Field burning helps control existence of some animals, insects, and birds. Traditionally, when sugar cane has been harvested, the field is set on fire to kill organisms that destroy canes. Eggs and other stages are also destroyed in the process. Hunting has been used in many countries and states to get rid of large organisms.

Traps are cheap and are easily obtainable from supermarkets. There are different types of traps available today. Snap traps are used more widely catching rodents than other types. Baits are attached on triggers and an approaching rodent is hit at the back of the head by a wire bars. Glue traps function by holding rodents that pass by. The homeowner has to check the trap once in a while to empty it.

Spraying poisons by trucks, planes, or hand held units that carry the spraying machine, is also a very common technique. This method may be used on streets, yards, businesses, homes, or fields. It is more effective for killing target organisms but may also have much negative effects on the health of people. Space fumigation entails sealing a space tightly then introducing a deadly gas. The gas is abandoned for a certain period to destroy the target pests. Other methods comprise space treatment, destruction of infected animals or plants, and sterilization among others.

When in necessity for pest control Albuquerque offers the best region to seek assistance from. There are numerous specialists who render quality services at affordable rates in Albuquerque city. Services may be personalized to meet particular personal interests.

Man gets DUI after driving on AA co-founder's lawn

(AP) ? Vermont State Police say a man faces a drunken driving charge after driving onto the lawn of the historic home in Dorset once owned by the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Police say 55-year-old Donald Blood III of Marlboro, Mass., was ordered to appear in court in Bennington on Jan. 14.

Police say Blood thought he was driving into a parking lot, but actually it was the lawn of the Wilson House, built in 1852, the birthplace of AA co-founder Bill Wilson.

The Wilson House's website describes it as a "place of sanctuary where people can come to give thanks to God for their new lives."

It still hosts several AA meetings each week.

As of Friday, TSA's gun?tally sat at 1,527?? 1,295 of which were loaded ? and this week?s count will likely bring the final tally just past 1,550 before the year ends.

Once a weapon is found, the TSA?s job ends, David Castelveter, the agency?s director of external communications, told Skift.??We are not an arresting authority. We don?t have detention authority. If somebody comes through with a weapon the immediate procedure is to call the local authority,? he said. ?There are some states where they just tell you to take it back to the car; in others you?ll end up at Rikers.?

Beyond the weekly tallies, which the TSA posts every Friday afternoon on its blog,?TSA does not follow arrests, indictments?or convictions stemming from firearms violations.??We just keep track of the confiscations, because the police don?t always keep us apprised of what happens,? Castelveter said.??We don?t pay attention to the arrest unless it turns into an indictment and we have an agent give testimony in a trial.?

The second half of 2012 has seen an increase over gun activity in the first six months: In July?On the National Security Beat, a project of Medill Journalism School, reported that 697 guns had been found, 170 of which were not only loaded but had rounds in their chambers.

Skift reported?earlier this month?that of the top 11 airports for firearms confiscation, five were in Texas, two were in Florida, and the most-confiscated title went to Atlanta?s?Hartsfield ? Jackson International.

President Obama Hawaii: What To Do On Oahu (PHOTOS)

As he has in past years, President Obama is set to head off on a Christmas vacation to Hawaii later this month.

We've seen in the past that the President is a creature of habit while wintering on Oahu, the island where he spent much of his chindhood. While he's there, we can probably count on the President stopping into Island Sno for at least one helping of shave ice, as well as enjoying dinner at Alan Wong's Restaurant and hitting the links at Mid Pacific Country Club (or maybe at the Klipper Golf Course on the Marine Corps Base.)

President Obama has also previously visited Sea Life Park near Hanauma Bay and the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. So, perhaps those will make the itinerary again. No word on whether or not POTUS will indulge in a little SPAM musubi again this year.

For anyone interested in visiting Oahu, but who lacks the President's local expertise, we've rounded up a few fun things to do on the island -- SPAM included.

  • 1) Attend A Luau

Sure luaus can be super tourist-y, but sometimes there's nothing wrong with indulging touristic curiosities. And, what visitor doesn't want to go to a luau just a little bit? There are plenty of places to experience the tradition. A few options include The <a href="http://www.polynesia.com/dining_and_luau.html#.ULkGs-Q71vE">Ali'i Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center</a>, the <a href="http://paradisecovehawaii.com/">Paradise Cove Luau</a>, and <a href="http://www.germainesluauoahu.com/">Germaine's Lua</a>u.

  • 2) Snorkel With The Dolphins

There are a handful of places in the U.S. where one can swim with dolphins, but most are in artificial habitats. The waters off Oahu, however, are a great place to encounter them in the wild. Sure, there's no riding or tricks by the animals, but it's way cooler to say you swam with dolphins (or sea turtles, or tropical fish) in their natural habitat. Check out companies like <a href="http://www.koolinaoceanadventures.com/">Ko Olina Ocean Adventures</a> or <a href="http://www.dolphinexcursions.com/learn.html">Dolphin Excursions</a> to take a snorkeling outing.

  • 3) Visit The North Shore

Hawaii is considered the birthplace of modern surfing, and Oahu's North Shore is one of the most famous destinations for hard core wave riders looking to tackle the notorious <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banzai_Pipeline">Pipeline</a>. <a href="http://www.gonorthshore.org/visitor_beaches.htm">The surfing is best in the winter</a>, while the other months are perfect for the less intrepid sunbathers.

  • 4) Take A Helicopter Tour

A great way to appreciate the beauty of this volcanic island is to get a bird's eye view by helicopter. Companies like <a href="http://www.makanikai.com/tour.html">Makani Kai Helicopters</a> and <a href="http://www.bluehawaiian.com/oahu/tours/">Blue Hawaiian Helicopters</a> offer tours.

  • 5) Visit Pearl Harbor

Consider it a patriotic duty to visit <a href="http://www.pearlharboroahu.com/">Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial</a> while on Oahu. The 1,177 crew members of the USS Arizona who died on December 7, 1941 are among the first causalities of the war in the Pacific. The memorial stands above the sunken ship and her fallen men.

  • 6) Eat Like A Local

No trip is ever complete without sampling the local delicacies. And, in Hawaii, that likely means SPAM -- they're crazy for it. SPAM can be found in all sorts of dishes, one of the most iconic being SPAM musubi (SPAM on rice wrapped in seaweed.) Other local favorites include the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink plate lunch (usually featuring the carb-on-carb combo of macaroni salad and rice) and the gut-busting loco moco (a hamburger patty and egg atop rice, drenched in gravy.) To fully appreciate all that culinary Hawaii has to offer, <a href="http://www.hawaiifoodtours.com/">consider taking a food tour</a>.

  • 7) Tour A Pineapple Grove

If you've ever been curious as to where your pineapples might come from, <a href="http://www.dole-plantation.com/">consider a trip to the Dole Plantation</a>. Here, visitors can tour the plantation gardens, or take a ride on the Pineapple Express, to learn all about the tropical fruit and Hawaii's agricultural history. The tours cost a small fee, but admission to stroll the grounds is free.

  • 8) Visit Iolani Palace

History buffs will enjoy a tour of <a href="http://www.iolanipalace.org/">Iolani Palace</a>, the official home of Hawaii's monarchy. The house was built in 1882 by King Kal?kaua, and was also home to his sister Queen Lili?uokalani.

  • 9) Hike Diamond Head

Diamond Head crater (technically speaking a volcanic tuff cone) sits near the eastern edge of Waikiki. Outdoors enthusiasts might enjoy a hike along the The 1.6 mile round-trip trail <a href="http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/hiking/oahu/index.cfm?hike_id=2">to learn about both the geological and military history of this formation</a>

  • 10) Take A Side Trip To Japan

Built in 1968, the <a href="http://www.byodo-in.com/">Byodo-in Temple</a> commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. It is a scaled replica of the Byodo-in Temple of Uji, Japan. The non-practicing Buddhist temple and its grounds (featuring a large reflecting pond, meditation niches, and small waterfalls) are a peaceful place to spend a leisurely afternoon. Oh, and it was also featured on TV favorites "Hawaii Five-O," "Magnum, P.I.," and "Lost." Speaking of which...

  • 11) Find "Lost" Filming Locations

Fans of the TV show "Lost" will certainly want to take at least some time to track down some of the Oahu locations made famous by the ABC show. There's even a website, <a href="http://www.lostlocations.com/">Lost Locations</a>, that's dedicated to the pursuit.

Pratt Park playground showered with bullets, and other New Orleans ...

A Pratt Park playground and football field where children were playing was showered with bullets Saturday afternoon, during what appeared to be an attempted drive-by shooting, witnesses and police said. According to the New Orleans Police Department, a report was filed claiming that a car was seen driving by the park around 4 p.m. when one or more people inside of the vehicle opened fire, spraying the nearby football field with bullets.

Police Commander John Thomas, who received the 3rd District report, said that the incident was being investigated as an illegal discharge of a weapon.

A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said there were approximately 20 children and teenagers present at the time the shots rang out, who ran and ducked for cover during the hail of gunfire.

Witnesses claimed they saw a lime-green Chevrolet Camaro speeding away from the scene near the 5400 block of Pratt Drive, Thomas said.

"We are looking into it and are looking for the owners registered to that car now. It is not clear if they are a person of interest in the case or simply someone who heard the shots and was trying to get out of there," Thomas said.

Anyone with any information on the incident to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 877.903.7867. Tips can also be texted to C-R-I-M-E-S (274637); text TELLCS then the crime information. Callers or texters do not have to give their names or testify and can earn a $2,500 reward for information that leads to an indictment.

Armed robbery in Broadmoor: A 54-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday night by three men on bicycles, police said.

The victim was standing outside on the street near the 4300 block of Washington Avenue when he was approached by three armed men riding bikes. One of the men shoved the 54-year-old to the ground and took his money before the group fled the scene.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Aggravated assault on Florida Avenue: A group of four women driving near the intersection of Alvar Street and Florida Avenue were the alleged targets of random gunfire on Saturday night, police said.

According to a police report given at a Dec. 19 5th District crime statistics meeting, the women, all in their 20s, were on their way to drop off a friend after dinner and driving in a sliver Oldsmobile Alero on Florida Avenue Saturday night when they noticed a dark blue vehicle following them.

Near the intersection of Alvar Street, police said, the blue car suddenly sped ahead and pulled out in front of the women. An unidentified man jumped out and? began to fire at them before quickly fleeing the scene, police said.

The women told police they did not know or recognize their alleged assailant. Police said they are investigating whether the shooter might have mistaken the women's car for a similar one belonging to someone else.

Christmas Home Tour - Our Family Room | A Blissful Nest

I thought it would be fun to take a tour of our family room and show you parts of my happy place. With all the craziness going on in the world right now I am nesting more than ever with my little family and truly feeling truly blessed for them. So with that . . .

Welcome to my home ? Christmas Edition!

This is the room we live in most so it is definitely the most decorated room in the house and why I am sharing this first for our Christmas Home Tour. The focal point of the room is our fireplace. We did not have a fireplace back in California so I feel spoiled having THE perfect spot to display some of my favorite pieces.

I have my prized Pottery Barn sea fan shadow box art as the main anchor to the top of the mantel and my white flower vases flanking either side.

I just filled these with some berries that match the mesh and berrie garland I draped along the front of the mantel.

This year a client had asked me to create her a reindeer art print with the sentiment ?Believe?. I loved it so much that I made one for myself too!

And at the bottom of this post you too can have this print! A little Christmas present from me to you my sweet friends.

I went a little crazy with ribbon this year thanks to Hobby Lobby! I wrapped, tied and added a bow to anything that I could! Touches of my favorite (low maintenance greenery!) were my touches of green ? boxwood and moss.

And a special little man has graced my mantel!

Since we are building fires we need to have wood piled up and ready to use. So I decided to wrap them up! I used wrapping paper from the $1 bins at Target and tossed in my moss wreaths from our Christmas Wish Party decorations.

A stacked pile of old soda crates on the other side of the fireplace, is a nice drink table for our chair nearby.

I hold this little bookcase very near and dear. My husband made it with his grandfather as a birthday gift for me many years ago. I put my favorite trinkets on it including coral from trips to Hawaii, black earthen ware from our honeymoon to Portugal, favorite photos and design books.

Of course I Christmas-fied the top!

Lastly our writing desk got dressed up with a little mesh, berries and Christmas balls.

Have fun this holiday season and enjoy EVERY moment with your family!

Here is a sweet little present to download to place in your home: ?

Westboro Baptist Church Says It Will Picket Vigil For Connecticut School Shooting Victims

The Westboro Baptist Church, the controversial group known for protesting outside funerals of slain U.S. service members, announced that it will picket a vigil for the victims of Friday's Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the second largest mass killing in American history.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the group and, like most members of the organization, a relative of the group's founder, Fred Phelps, announced on Twitter on Saturday the group's plan "to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment."

It is unclear when the group plans to protest, although a tweet from Margie Phelps implied that it would be during a vigil that will be attended by President Barack Obama on Sunday evening.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church say that America is being punished for its acceptance of gays and lesbians. In recent days, Phelps family members have sent tweets about the Connecticut shooting that have said "God sent the shooter."

Not surprisingly, the group's announcement was met with resistance online. A Change.org petition asking for Connecticut officials to prevent the group from protesting has been launched, and users of the social news and link sharing site Reddit have been discussing ways to stage a counter-protest.

A Facebook event that calls for "counter-activity" to "keep any hatred from touching" the grieving families has over 10,000 attendees, but because of a bomb threat in Newtown on Sunday, the event has been cancelled.

Anonymous, the loosely affiliated group of Internet "hacktivists," said that it had hacked the group's website and released personal information about the group's members, according to The Inquisitr.

The Southern Poverty Law Center calls the Westboro Baptist Church "arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America," while the Anti-Defamation League calls it "a small virulently homophobic, anti-Semitic hate group."

In 2011, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church, saying that the right to picket funerals was protected under the First Amendment. President Obama earlier this year, however, signed legislation that said that protests must be held 300 feet from military funerals.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story indicated that WBC members would picket Sandy Hook Elementary School. The vigil as at Newtown High School.

Erectile Dysfunction Could Be Linked With Heart Disease

Concerns around erectile dysfunction typically focus on a man's inability to have sex. As serious a problem as this is, studies point to a more devastating issue that could be behind having difficulty maintaining an erection: heart disease.

Research has connected erectile dysfunction with heart disease in men between the ages of 30 to 60 for years, but it is still not commonly known among the public. "You hear about men who pass away from heart disease," began Dr. Kevin Billups, director of Johns Hopkins Hospital's Integrative Men?s Health Program, "and their wives find Viagra [in their belongings] and they didn't even know they had a problem."

For many men, experiencing erectile dysfunction is the first signal of risk factors which, if unchecked, can lead to heart disease, according to doctors. "The likelihood of having heart disease at some point is two to three times higher in those who have ED than those who don?t," said Dr. Mehdi Shishehbor, a cardiology specialist at Cleveland Clinic.

But why would a problem affecting your penis signal a larger problem with your heart? "The penile arteries are much smaller than the arteries that supply blood to the heart, brain or lower extremities, and will block faster," explained Dr. Billups. "Erectile dysfunction will often appear as a symptom years before the heart attack. The other reason is that the penis is more sensitive [than other organs] to early changes associated with increased risk of heart disease, such as inflammation and oxidative stress."

Coronary heart disease occurs when the arteries around the heart harden and narrow, making it more difficult for much-needed blood to reach the heart muscles. A number of variables (high cholesterol, hypertension, smoking and/or diabetes, for example) cause this hardening, which can lead to chest pain or even a heart attack.

"The same process can happen in the pelvis," Dr. Shishehbor explained. "The same risk factors that apply to coronary artery disease are the same risk factors that apply to blockages in the penis. Over the years blockages form and prevent blood from getting to the penis. In order to get an erection we need blood flow to the penis.

"As you age and if you don?t take care of your risk factors -- if you smoke, don?t eat healthy, don?t control your blood pressure," he continued, "those things can lead to the same process that leads to blockages in the heart and can cause blockages in the penis."

If a man notices he has issues maintaining an erection, he should go to his primary care physician to get checked out, both doctors said.

"A lot of times I?ll pick up that their waist circumference is wider than 40 inches, and that they have high blood pressure or chloesterol problems," all risk factors for heart disease, said Dr. Billups. "ED is the symptom that gets the guys' attention."

"Your cholesterol should be treated aggressively," added Dr. Shishehbor. "Your diabetes, if you have it, should be controlled. You decide to stop smoking -- obviously you should pick up a healthy lifestyle, improving your exercise and your eating habits."

Once the risk factors are addressed, ED can then be treated in the ways most of us are familiar with: pills, vacuum pumps, injections and the like.

Getting the problem addressed as soon as you notice that you're having a problem maintaining an erection is key to avoiding a potentially tragic -- and potentially avoidable -- end.

"Don?t get a pill from your buddy," Billups said. "Go and get checked out. Fixing it is easy... if we can save your life."

Geminid meteor show reaches peak

The annual Geminids meteor shower peaked overnight into Friday morning.

The meteors appeared to radiate from a point near the star Castor, in the constellation Gemini.

In the northern hemisphere, that was westward and nearly overhead in the early hours of Friday.

Many sky watchers saw dozens of "shooting stars" per hour, made easier to see by darkness provided by the "new moon" phase.

The shower comes about each year as the Earth passes through the path of an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon.

The asteroid leaves behind a trail of rocky debris that the Earth ploughs into each year - debris moving at 35km per second that burns up in the atmosphere in what can be spectacular displays.

According to the International Meteor Organization, the "radiant" - the apparent point from which the meteors seem to come - was visible from sunset in high northern latitudes, rising at about midnight local time in the southern hemisphere.

The Geminids are less well-known relative to other annual meteoric performances such as the Perseids, in part because December weather often threatens a clear view of the show.

When a child dies - sharing my grief story for those in Newtown, CT ...

Yesterday's horrific story of violence and murder shook all of us throughout the country. We cried, we hugged our loved ones and we felt compassion for this town, this school and most of all these parents. For some of us, the compassion was a bit more, it was empathy as we remembered our own grief and felt again the pain of the loss of a child.

No two stories of loss are ever the same just as no two children are the same. Those of us who have mourned the loss of a child feel a bit more acutely the pain that those parents are feeling. My infant son Matthew was born with congenital heart disease and died on the operating table trying to fix him four days later. He was not murdered, he did not suffer fear before his death and it was no one's fault. None the less, I was bereft after he died. My brain was so filled with pain that I could handle few other thoughts. My arms ached, my gut ached and I thought I would never recover.

My lowest moment was laying in the bathtub, howling like a wounded primal animal, screaming to my Mother, who had died a year before, to take care of my son. Once I decided to get out of that tub my grief work and progress was so slow that I think it could be measured only at a molecular level. I was lucky, I had a surviving cherished 3 year old daughter, Emily, who gave me the motivation to get out of that tub and that dark dark place in my life.

I had fabulous friends some of whom gave me bits of themselves and helped me get through each day and thrive. I had other friends who just didn't get it, one who whined that she wanted the old Kathy back. What I tried to communicate to her was that when you have a child who lives, it changes your life forever. It's the exact same thing with a child who dies, it changes you and your life forever. I needed my friends and their molecules. Three of us started a chapter of Compassionate Friends in our area and I was active in that group for five years. Running those meetings and doing the newsletter literally saved my life. Helping others was what helped me.

I also turned to the Arts. I sought out authors, poets, sculptures, painters and musicians who had expressed the same grief in song, stories, books and other non verbal ways of communication. I turned to my quilts. I made a quilt for Matthew, I called it Sailing Away. As I stitched each sailboat, I tried to quilt in some sadness that would sail away from me. Both of my girls adore this quilt and it has been wrapped around them for comfort throughout the years.
sailboat
I was also lucky enough to be able to parent an additional child. I could not conceive again for various medical reasons but five years later, my beloved Shelby came to me from Korea. This is when I felt I became whole again, that my arms no longer ached, I felt healed. And since then, my life has continued to improve and I have flourished. In my heart, Matthew will always live and he made me a better person who so wishes to reach out to the parents who wail with sorrow today.

I have known other bereaved parents who were not as lucky as I was. Grief is an infinite void within you and some parents I have known have sought a finite source to fill that emptiness. No amount of shopping, eating, drinking, drugs or bitterness will do it. You have to slog through that horrible pain and feel it and seek your own way through it. My ex-husband was not one of those who did. Marriage is another victim when a child dies, 70% fail afterwards and up to 90% if the death is accidental. My ex sought his refuge in a bottle and years after our divorce, finally drank himself to death.

I wish I could make a quilt big enough to wrap up every hurting parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt and uncle. I wish I could provide them with even one molecule of healing, share with them one tiny atom of hope and love.

More Snow Could Mean Less Ice for Antarctic

Increased snowfall that's expected in Antarctica as the climate warms is likely to send more ice into the sea, new research finds. The effect is so strong that additional sea-level rise caused by extra snowfall is greater than the rise caused by extra heat melting the ice directly.

The new study comes shortly after a recent analysis found that ice melt in Greenland and Antarctica has contributed nearly a half-inch to sea-level rise since 1992. Antarctic ice sheets once thought protected from melting are also more vulnerable than expected, researchers reported in May.

Antarctica's response to climate change has always been uncertain, in part because a warming atmosphere can hold more moisture than a cooler one. More moisture is expected to bring more snow to Antarctica, which could potentially offset the melting of ice caused by warmer air and ocean water.

Now, that offset doesn't look so likely. Ricarda Winkelmann and her colleagues at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany used computer modeling to look at how the Antarctic would respond to various climate-warming scenarios. They found that greater snowfall actually enhances ice loss rather than offsetting it.

"Our simulations under future climate scenarios show that between 30 percent and 65 percent of the ice gain from enhanced snowfall are compensated by an increase of ice loss," Winkelmann told LiveScience.

The reason: When snow falls, it increases the elevation of the land or ice it falls on. In Antarctica, snow falling on the floating ice shelves weighs them down, making them sink more heavily in the water. The land doesn't have that type of elasticity, so the same amount of snowfall on the landmass of Antarctica causes 10 times the elevation change as on floating ice.

The result is a steep slope from land to ice, the natural equivalent of a Slip 'n Slide for Antarctica's ice. Ice flows faster from the continent toward the sea, resulting in sea-level rise. [Ice World: Gallery of Awe-Inspiring Glaciers]

How bad this is depends on how warm the world gets. The researchers used several scenarios based on how much extra warmth Earth will hang onto with different concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The least dire is an extra 2.6 Watts per square meter by 2100, while the worst scenario is an extra 8.5 Watts per square meter by that time. The researchers estimate that in a 2.6 Watts/square meter scenario, Antarctic ice will cause the equivalent of 0.26 feet (0.08 meters) in sea-level rise thanks to extra snowfall. In the worst-case scenario, the sea-level rise jumps to 1.8 feet (0.56 m).

Those numbers are between 100 percent and 200 percent of the ice loss caused by surface and ocean warmth combined, Winkelmann said. By 2500, ice loss caused by snowfall in the warmest scenario could hit 4 feet (1.45 m).

Despite the fact that these findings hold along the entire Antarctic coast, there is still lots of uncertainty about Antarctica's future, Winkelmann said.

"We need to make further steps towards a full assessment of sea-level rise ? globally and locally," she said.
