Diets high in salt could deplete calcium in the body

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? When sodium leaves a body, it takes calcium along with it, creating risk for kidney stones and osteoporosis.

The scientific community has always wanted to know why people who eat high-salt diets are prone to developing medical problems such as kidney stones and osteoporosis.

Medical researchers at the University of Alberta may have solved this puzzle through their work with animal lab models and cells.

Principal investigator Todd Alexander and his team recently discovered an important link between sodium and calcium. These both appear to be regulated by the same molecule in the body. When sodium intake becomes too high, the body gets rid of sodium via the urine, taking calcium with it, which depletes calcium stores in the body. High levels of calcium in the urine lead to the development of kidney stones, while inadequate levels of calcium in the body lead to thin bones and osteoporosis.

"When the body tries to get rid of sodium via the urine, our findings suggest the body also gets rid of calcium at the same time," says Alexander, a Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry researcher whose findings were recently published in the peer-reviewed journal American Journal of Physiology -- Renal Physiology.

"This is significant because we are eating more and more sodium in our diets, which means our bodies are getting rid of more and more calcium. Our findings reinforce why it is important to have a low-sodium diet and why it is important to have lower sodium levels in processed foods."

It's been known for a long time that this important molecule was responsible for sodium absorption in the body, but the discovery that it also plays a role in regulating calcium levels is new.

"We asked a simple question with our research -- could sodium and calcium absorption be linked? And we discovered they are," says Alexander.

"We found a molecule that seems to have two jobs -- regulating the levels of both calcium and sodium in the body. Our findings provide very real biological evidence that this relationship between sodium and calcium is real and linked."

In their research, the team worked with lab models that didn't have this important molecule, so the models' urine contained high levels of calcium. Because calcium was not absorbed and retained by the body, bones became thin.

A journal editorial written about this research discovery noted the molecule could be a drug target to one day "treat kidney stones and osteoporosis."

The primary funder of the research was the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

"We are proud to support the research of Dr. Todd Alexander," said Wim Wolfs, National Director of Research of The Kidney Foundation of Canada. "Data in the United States shows that nearly 10% of adults will have a kidney stone at least once in their life. The prevalence of kidney stones also seems to be increasing in the U.S., which may be attributed to high rates of obesity and diabetes, along with possibly increased salt intake."

Chemical Brothers, Don't Think - Live From Japan Album Review

Earlier this year, The Chemical Brothers became the first artists of their kind to release a four-dimensional movie of a live performance in cinemas only. Recorded last July at the Fuji Rock festival in Niigata, Japan, 'Don't Think' is a visually interactive documentary that captures the essence of The Chemical Brothers live performance in every way possible. Having witnessed the cinematic experience at Nottingham's Showcase in February alongside a smattering of hardcore fans and passers by, its one of those films that demands to be seen, perhaps more importantly, in the right surroundings. Directed by Adam Smith, whose previous credits range from overseeing episodes of Dr Who and Skins to music videos for The Streets as well as providing visuals for The Chemical Brothers first ever gig in 1994, 'Don't Think' is a timeless collection of footage highlighting the euphoric intensity of one of the UK's most consistent live acts these past two decades.

Following on from the initial film, the official release of 'Don't Think' comes as a DVD & CD double-pack that is a must-have for anyone remotely interested in The Chemical Brothers. Aside from the two discs, the elaborate packaging features a selection of stills taken from the live footage, and comes in the shape of an ornate, hardback case. While the audio CD breaks the concert down into eleven segments, leaving out Junior Parker's sophisticated intro cover of The Beatles 'Tomorrow Never Knows' and 'It Doesn't Matter' from the band's breakthrough sophomore record 'Dig Your Own Hole', the DVD captures their festival headline slot in its entirety.

From Parker's introductory piece to the pulsating 'Another World' and 'Do It Again' that open the show, it's a non-stop hyperactive array of dancing marshmallow men, lasers, floating fruit and multi-coloured shapes. And that's just on the big screens situated behind Ed Symons and Tom Rowlands, the Brothers themselves. However, what sets 'Don't Think' apart from every other live concert given an airing on celluloid is that it doesn't just stop there. Full frontal shots of the duo's stage show only accounts for about one third of 'Don't Think'. The accompanying footage for 'Get Yourself High' takes you into Symons and Rowland's confined spaces on stage, traversing the pair from every angle as though the viewr is interactively hitting every note with them. And then there's the audience footage, much of which focuses around a pretty young Japanese girl whose facial expressions kind of take us through every single voyage of what it's like to be at such an event, chemically enhanced or otherwise, from the adrenalin rush of the build up to the sheer ecstasy of several thousand hands in the air for 'Swoon', until the post-rave comedown greets 'Superflash' in the film's home stretch.

Highlights arrive thick and fast. The aforementioned 'Superflash' introduced with a fearful clown's face insisting "You are my children now!" to close-up cataclysmic screams from selected audience members; the smooth segue from the band's 'Leave Home' anthem into 'Galvanize', the only noticeable link being the instinctive war cry of "Don't look back." Elsewhere, graphics appear then flicker out of focus before returning as something entirely unrelated altogether. The only thing that's missing is long time favourite 'The Private Psychedelic Reel' but when you've a back catalogue as exhaustive as what The Chemical Brothers possess, it would be nigh on impossible to squeeze everything into just over eighty minutes.

As an ambitious statement of intent in its own right, 'Don't Think' is streets ahead of anything else of its kind. As a document celebrating the unflappable genius of arguably dance music's most forward thinking innovators, it's simply unmissable.

Wacom Bamboo Splash CTL471

With the new Bamboo Splash drawing tablet?($79 direct), Wacom is taking a more sensible approach toward appealing to budding artists, amateur cartoonists, and students. Last year's Bamboo Connect ($79, 2.5 stars) is still available, and still costs the same as the Splash. But the Splash is a better deal for most consumers, as it includes all the right software this time around?particularly ArtRage Studio. It's a great choice if you want to get started with drawing with a pen and seeing the results on screen, whether it's for virtual ink, paint, pencil lead, or charcoal.

Design, Package, and Setup
Let's start with the tablet itself, which is the same as the one in the Bamboo Connect package. It's a black slab that measures 6.9 by 10.9 by 0.4 inches (HWD). It's pretty slim, with tapered edges and a neon green bottom panel and cloth loop for holding the pen. As before, the actual drawing surface measures 5.8 by 3.6 inches. It has a matte finish with a pleasant, tacky feel when used with the bundled Bamboo Pen. The detachable USB cord lets you reposition the tablet more easily.

Unfortunately, the bundled Bamboo Pen still lacks an eraser. This is a frustrating limitation, especially since Wacom Bamboo tablets at a similar price point a few years ago came with one; it's as if the marketing department decided to take it out as an incentive to upgrade to the larger $199 Bamboo Create. Unfortunately, the Bamboo Splash still doesn't work with Wacom's Wireless Accessory Kit ($39.95), which comes with a small battery, transmitter, and USB receiver?you need to move up to the Bamboo Capture ($99, 3.5 stars) for that option.

The package includes the Bamboo tablet and pen, a USB cable, three software CD-ROMs, and three spare pen tips. For this review, I tested the Bamboo Splash and included software on a Lenovo ThinkPad L420 Core i3-powered laptop with 8GB RAM and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed. Setup is simple: Boot your computer, install the Bamboo Splash driver CD, and follow the on-screen instructions. During the installation, you're asked if you want to configure the tablet for left or right-handed use (and you can change this later). Once you're done, then install ArtRage Studio and Autodesk Sketchbook Express manually.

Software, Performance, and Conclusions
So what's on the new CDs? ArtRage Studio is a painting program, and a pretty full featured one at that. Autodesk Sketchbook Express offers a variety of brushes, pencils, and pens, and is more suited for detailed pen and pencil work. The tablet and bundled software work on both Macs and PCs. With the main software installed, a small Bamboo dialog box opens on the desktop with a "Draw To Open" button. Aside from the lack of an eraser, the pen itself is great. It's pressure sensitive, wireless, and doesn't need a battery. Combined with the Bamboo tablet surface, it's sensitive to 1,024 levels of pressure.

ArtRage Studio (pictured, above) is where the action is. Drawing and painting with the Bamboo Splash feels much more natural and accurate than I expected. Press down harder, and you'll lay more paint on the "canvas" on screen. Switch to a different color, and you'll mix the two together as you paint, just as if the paint was wet in real life, and then bleeds out along the edge as you move to a clean area. Turning up the Metallic slider adds sparkle. Big rollers let you lay down huge swaths of paint, which even has the texture of a roller as you press more lightly.

Photo editors looking for an inexpensive tablet for editing should skip the Splash and move up to the Bamboo Capture, which comes with multi-touch control and a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements. If you can afford it, it's worth it to step up either to the Bamboo Create for its larger surface and eraser, or better yet, to the midsize Wacom Intuos5 ($349, 4 stars), our current Editors' Choice for drawing tablets. The Intuos5 offers increased accuracy, programmable capacitive buttons, and special software hooks for drawing-specific features in Photoshop, Lightroom, and Maya. Otherwise, the Bamboo Stylus does exactly what it's supposed to do. And at $79, it's a tempting impulse buy. Now Wacom, how about putting the eraser back?

One major key to job creation is ensuring companies across Iowa have access to quality broadband services. According to Connect Iowa, a broadband advocacy group, approximately 26,000 jobs are created or saved with every seven percent increase in broadband adoption.

Last March I wrote about new rules that had been proposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) which had the potential to jeopardize rural Iowa?s access to quality Broadband Internet. At that time, the FCC had proposed troubling changes to the ?Universal Service Fund?, which helped extend telephone and Internet services to rural areas. The new FCC regulations were likely to reduce funding and decrease predictability for many locally-based cooperatives and commercial telecom providers in Iowa.

New developments have recently been released by the FCC that continue to take rural Iowa down the path of reduced access to Broadband Internet. The FCC has now replaced the Universal Service Fund with the Connect America Fund, and has eliminated the access fees that many of our rural Iowa telecom providers depend on for consistent revenue.

The bulk of the new Connect America Fund will go to large companies that do not generally focus on expanding services to rural Iowa. Additionally, it is important to note that all Iowans will be affected by the new rule, because the FCC considers the entire state of Iowa to be rural, not just our small communities. This means that Iowans will continue to be taxed by the federal government to pay into the Connect America Fund, without receiving improved Internet services, while urban areas such as New York City and Chicago receive a disproportionate share of our money. Telecom consumers in Iowa will pay an extra 50 cents per month and businesses an extra dollar per month in access recovery charges, with additional charges pending in 2013 and 2014.

We live in a fast-paced world. In order to be successful in today?s business climate, it is essential that companies have quick and reliable Internet services. Oil giant CNOOC to buy Canada's Nexen for $15.1B

SHANGHAI (AP) ? Chinese offshore oil and gas giant CNOOC Ltd. said Monday it has agreed to buy Canadian producer Nexen Inc. for $15.1 billion in China's biggest overseas energy acquisition.

CNOOC and other big state-owned Chinese energy companies have stepped up purchases of oil and gas assets in the Americas as part of a strategy to gain access to resources needed to fuel China's economy.

The offer of $27.50 a share is a premium of 60 percent to Nexen's closing price Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.

CNOOC expects the takeover to be finalized in the fourth quarter of this year, pending government approvals.

The companies already had a strategic alliance that involved CNOOC investments in Nexen offshore wells in the Gulf of Mexico.

CNOOC said it planned to list its shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange as part of its longer term strategy.

Calgary, Alberta-based Nexen operates in western Canada, the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea, Africa and the Middle East, with its biggest reserves in Canadian oil sands. It produced an average of 213,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day in the second quarter of this year.

"The acquisition reflects our strong belief in Nexen's rich and diverse portfolio of assets and world-class management and employees," CNOOC Chairman Wang Yilin said in a statement.

The acquisition vastly expands CNOOC's holdings in Canada, where the company has already invested about $2.8 billion. CNOOC said it plans to set up its regional headquarters in Calgary, retaining Nexen's management team and staff while increasing the company's spending to develop the Canadian company's energy reserves.

"This transaction will allow for significant investment in our business and opens the door to new opportunities for our employees," Kevin Reinhart, interim CEO of Nexen, said in a statement.

My son, a bio child, said when he first started wiping himself he forgot where the toilet paper went (I was thinking to myself, seriously, I didn't teach the child to throw it in the toilet?!). So, if no one ever tells them to put it in the toilet, or no one ever sends them back when they are 3 years old, or four years old, to flush and wipe correctly, they just don't know. Something like that probably does take a long time to relearn...signs might work, if they can't read, maybe a picture?

Amid the booms of gunfire and smoke from tear gas in a crowded Aurora, Colo., movie theater, Jansen Young felt her boyfriend give her one final push under a seat to shield her ? a move she believes saved her life.

But Jon Blunk didn?t survive the attack on the Friday midnight showing of ?The Dark Knight Rises? outside Denver. ?

"Jon just took a bullet for me," Young, a 21-year-old who recently became a certified veterinarian technician, told TODAY.?

The couple, dating since October, according to Young, had been surprised to be able to get tickets on the day of the popular movie?s premiere.

When the alleged assailant, James Eagan Holmes, began his attack on the crowd, Blunk, who Young said had some military experience, knew what was going on, Young said.

"He knew and threw me on the ground, and was like, 'We have to get down and stay down,'" she told NBC News.

In the chaos that ensued, Young recalled hearing a woman screaming, "I've been shot,? and a man who stepped on the chair she was hiding under crying out, ?Jessie?s been shot.? She heard the constant "boom, boom, boom" of the guns and smelled the gunpowder.

"There was kind of a break in between each gunshot,? she said. "Every gunshot, I was like, 'This is it ? I'm done for.'"

The one constant for her during the attack was Jon's arms pushing her under the seat to keep her out of the line of fire. At one point, she felt herself get struck, and showed a reporter about a dozen marks on her left torso that she believes may have been from shrapnel.

"I kind of felt that in multiple places,? she said of the marks. Then, she said, "Jon gave me one good push against that concrete again and then ? I didn?t really feel his arms against my back anymore but I knew he was still there."

At first, she didn?t think he had been shot, but knew something had happened.

"I guess I didn?t really know he had passed, up until I started shaking him and saying, 'Jon, Jon we have to go ? it's time for us to get out of here,'" she said, her voice trembling.

When Young wiggled out from under the seat, few people were left in the theater. She saw some people crawling on the ground, a few still in their seats and others running out.

She tried to pull Blunk up by the shoulder, but he didn?t move, and she assumed he was dead.

Blunk's estranged wife, Chantel Blunk, who lives in Reno, Nev., with their two kids, confirmed to NBC News that the FBI said Blunk was indeed killed in the theater.

?He is the guy that would take a bullet for you. He did the right thing all the time,? Young said. ?I know I would not be here today if Jon had not been next to me in that movie theater.?

She told TODAY he wasn?t just a hero that fateful Friday night, but had been one forever. She said he had been planning to re-enlist in the military.

?It was what he wanted to do. He loved it,? she said. ?Even though he saved me and gave me the opportunity to live, he would?ve done that for anyone that day.?

Young said she still couldn?t believe he was?gone.

?I?m still trying to decide if this is real, like you know, he?s going to walk in the door tonight when he gets off work."

A University of California, Davis graduate, Kristin, joined the Honig Vineyard and Winery team as winemaker in 1998. She brought 16 years of Napa Valley winemaking experience and a passion for creating delicious wines. Overseeing all aspects of production, from the grape to the bottle, she has worked to protect and improve wine quality, helping to build recognition for Honig wines as benchmarks for Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.?

Kristin is active in professional associations, including California Enological Research Association, Napa Valley Vine Technical Group and Napa Valley Vineyard Technical Group. She is also a member of the American Society of Viticulture and Enology and the Trellis Alliance.?

Daniel Bailey - ?Jones Family Vineyards

In 1992 Sally and Rick Jones found a gorgeous view that came with a few acres of vineyards. A retirement home; a family place was what they had in mind. After selling grapes to Stag?s Leap Winery for a few years Rick tasted the unblended wine made from the vineyard?s fruit and decided it was too good to let it be blended away in someone else?s wine. Jones Family Vineyards was born from this in 1996.

Jones Family Vineyards unique flavor characteristics grow from our special terroir ? a combination of soils and micro-climate. Our three estate vineyards are located in the northern Napa Valley at the base of Howell Mountain about 5 miles north St. Helena. The soils are rocky which allows for excellent drainage, but each vine must burrow deep into the soil to find nutrients and water. Water is also a precious commodity in our land; we irrigate just enough to compensate for the drying effect of the sun.

Our vineyard elevations vary from 600 feet at the base of the estate to about 900 feet at our highest point. Throughout each vineyard the slopes undulate from relatively flat, to almost 35% in slope. Each vine has adapted to its unique location, and the variation in elevation and slope allows for a layering of flavors in the fruit we harvest.

Our warm days and cooler evenings work with the full southern sun exposure to ripen our fruit earlier than most. This stressing of the vines and early ripening reduces our berry and cluster size creating a more extracted and concentrated flavor when our wines are pressed.

10 total acres of vineyards in 3 distinct blocks means each lot has a flavor profile of its own. Seven acres of cabernet sauvignon were planted between 1991 and 1993 on 110R rootstock from clone 8. Prompt of the Week: Write about something red.

Have you heard the good news? Writing helps you lose weight!

This isn?t my claim: it?s Julia Cameron?s, author of the ?The Artist?s Way.? In sum (because I only have about 600 words to work with here), it?s a mix of her popular morning pages exercise (three pages of stream of consciousness writing in the a.m.) in conjunction with keeping a food journal.

Statistics have proved for years that keeping a food journal is a key element to success when it comes to weight loss. Why? Because attention leads to awareness. Goal setting is infinitely more effective if you write down your goals instead of keeping them as a thought floating around in your head. Putting pen to paper makes it concrete; it makes it real. It?s almost like giving your brain directions for what to do next. It?s a map, so to speak. And once it?s there in black and white, something you can see at any time (because you?re going to put it somewhere visible), you?ll find that things start to move forward.

So if creative writing isn?t your thing (yet), consider putting a few goals onto paper this week. No need to come up with a bucket list of everything you want to do in life; you don?t have to draft your mid-year resolutions. Just choose one or two things that you?d really really like to do/be/have. Write it down and put it everywhere (front door, bathroom room, fridge, above the toilet, car dashboard). Then fuhgettaboutit. Read it when you see it and go on with your day. If you notice something happening that moves you in the direction of your goal, jot that down. Keep a list of any ?evidence? or proof, no matter how small. As you begin to notice the small things, bigger things will begin to happen. I wish I could explain it better, but I can?t. I just know it works.
